Functions as a pharmacy technician in the 24 hour Pharmacy Service, fully trained and familiar with departmental procedures and policy guidelines in Outpatient and Inpatient pharmacies as assigned.
Assignments may include the Inpatient Pharmacy (IV admixture services and chemotherapy preparation, unit doses services, ward stock replenishment service, restocking automated dispensing machines); and Outpatient Pharmacy functions (prescription filing and drug entry, dispensing functions, bulk compounding and repacking functions). Also works in controlled substance areas (inpatient or outpatient vault), compliance packaging area, and as a customer service/resolution expert.
Reports medication safety issues and quality issues through the appropriate channels and strives to prevent defects in the medication use system.
Tour of Duty: Rotational all shifts/all days/weekends/holidays. May work at a location off site from primary assignment (Toledo, OH, versus Ann Arbor, MI) if the need arises.
PART-TIME: This is a part-time position (32 hours/per biweekly pay period). The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.

COVERAGE. This standard applies to all pharmacy technician positions in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Under the supervision of a pharmacist, pharmacy technicians perform routine pharmacy functions including receiving prescriptions from patients in writing or electronically from physicians. Pharmacy technicians prepare prescriptions by counting, pouring, weighing, measuring, and mixing the medication if necessary. Pharmacy technicians maintain patient profiles, prepare insurance claim forms, stock, and take inventory of medications. Pharmacy technicians prepare medications for inpatients in various settings, including sterile product preparation.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA regulations)
Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA regulations.
Grade Determinations. In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:
PossessONE (1) year experience at the next lower level, and fully meet the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated as:
1. The ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action;
2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment;
3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents;
4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products;
5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts;
6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
One year of experience at the next lower grade level:
1. Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.
2. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.
3. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
Creditable Experience. To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of pharmacy technician practice.
Part-time Experience. Part-time experience as a pharmacy technician is credited according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a pharmacy technician would receive 1 week of full-time credit for each 2 weeks of half-time work.
Quality of Experience. To be creditable, pharmacy technician experience must be documented on the application and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means.
