The incumbent will perform phlebotomy and follow proper procedures for specimen receipt, handling, and processing to ensure accurate, reliable laboratory results. The majority of the incumbents day will be spent performing routine venipuncture specimen collections in the outpatient setting. Duties include but aren't limited to:
Follows proper procedures for specimen receipt, handling, and processing.
Performing routine venipuncture specimen collections in the outpatient setting.
Draws specimens for timed procedures.
Adheres to proper patient identification.
Recognize adverse patient reactions.
Work Schedule: Hours vary and will include some weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements: Physical demands may involve minimal lifting, long periods of standing, walking, bending, or sitting. The incumbent must have the digital dexterity and adequate vision to perform safe venipuncture procedures. Lifting will not exceed a weight of 30 pounds. The incumbent must fully utilize all safety practices and equipment provided by the medical center, and in compliance with local and accrediting agency requirements.

Specialized Experience:
Must possess 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-3 in the Federal service). Examples of general experience are: (a) any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position OR (b) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Examples of specialized experience are: (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking), preparing reports of findings, and perform venipuncture OR (b) technical support work in a closely related field, i.e. biological lab technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for this position.

Successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of the training course as described in (a) above for GS-3; or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled.

Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-4 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-04. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position
