Setting up, maintaining, and cleaning anesthesia equipment. Transporting patients to and from operating rooms. Assisting in patient position for spinal, epidurals, and regional blocks. Cleaning and restocking anesthesia carts. Performing basic trouble shooting techniques. At the full performance level, Incumbent will aid anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists in less-complex anesthetic procedures such as regional anesthesia (epidural and spinal), laryngeal mask anesthesia, and monitor anesthesia care under close supervision.
Duties also include the following:
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.
Functional Statement Title/#:Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia)
Physical Requirements: Work is mainly sedentary but requires some bending, walking, standing, pushing of carts and equipment, and the carrying of such items as patient records, light sterile supplies, and letter mail.
Medical Instrument Technician Functional Requirements: Moderate Lifting (15 -44 lbs ); Moderate Carrying (15 - 44 lbs); Pushing (.5 hour); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (up to 4 hours); Standing (up to 4 hours); Kneeling (.5 hour); Repeated bending (.5 hour); Climbing, legs only (.25 hour); Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in other; Ability to distinguish basic color; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing (aid permitted); Mental & Emotional Stability (Must be able to function in stresssful situations).
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Preferred Expeirence: Basic Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at the GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
In addition to the basic requirements above the following is the amount of experience required to qualify for this position at a GS-06, GS-7 or GS-8 grade level.
GS-6 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSA's:
1. Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology (specifically cardiac and pulmonary).
2. Knowledge and application of safety and infection control processes.
3. Ability to serve as a circulating technician for supplies and to assist with documentation of hemodynamic patient data.
4. Knowledge of anesthesiology supplies and equipment appropriate to less complex anesthetic procedures, such as those found in Ambulatory Surgery.
Certification: No certification or registration is required. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certifications is desirable for employees at this level.
GS-7 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSA's:
1. Knowledge of the fundamentals of standard equipment operation, calibration and functions.
2. Knowledge of correct of non-invasive patient monitoring equipment specific to anesthesiology.
3. Ability to appropriately interact with patients during anesthetic procedures.
4. Knowledge of anesthesiology supplies and equipment appropriate to routine anesthetic procedures, such as those found in typical inpatient settings.
Certification: No certification or registration is required. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certifications is desirable for employees at this level.
GS-8 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled.
1. Knowledge of the correct use of invasive patient monitoring equipment specific to anesthesiology.
2. Knowledge of basic electrocardiography (EKG).
3. Skill and ability to troubleshoot equipment, often while patient is anesthetized.
4. Skill and ability to maintain sterility during procedures.
5. Knowledge and understanding of arterial pressure line wave forms including the ability to recognize and distinguish normal from abnormal, artifact from abnormality, and forewarn the physician or anesthetist of an impending life-threatening situation.
6. Knowledge of anesthesiology supplies, medications, and equipment appropriate to more difficult anesthetic procedures such as those found in inpatients settings with more acutely ill patients.
Certification: No certification or registration is required. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certifications is desirable for employees at this level.
