This position is located on a Forest Service unit and is responsible for providing technical support to the heritage resources staff. This vacancy announcement is for one or more negotiable duty stations within TEAMS Enterprise Forest Service Unit.
These positions are NOT located on a single Forest Service unit. The purpose of these positions is in support of unit programs primarily in archeological duties that involve forest inventories. Unlike traditional Forest Service units, TEAMS Enterprise does not receive any appropriated funding and must fully recover operating costs through work agreements with government agencies throughout the U.S. These positions require extensive travel p r work assignment to various locations in the United States. Tours of duty typically involve working weekends. TEAMS provides high-quality natural resource project implementation solutions for the Forest Service and other government agencies. TEAMS employment often provides opportunities to see different areas of the country, thus exposing our crews to a variety of geographic locations.
TEMPORARY APPOINTMENT: Considerable travel may be required. Some positions involve work that requires travel away from the official duty location to remote worksites within commuting distance (49 miles).
Positions will be filled as a temporary appointment up to 6 months.

Analyzes archaeological data in preparing reports, for situations where precedents are not fully applicable. Makes recommendations to be used in "determinations of effect" and "determinations of eligibility" by the archaeologist. Compiles and reports information about the nature and extent of known cultural resources.
Adapts ground search strategies as determined by specific project requirements i.e., terrain, vegetation cover, and time frames. Applies scientific methods to survey parcels of land to determine likely sites of archaeological interest.
Prepares Cultural Resource Inventory reports and site forms. Enters site and inventory information into databases and onto GIS maps. Responsible for the preparation of archaeological and historical information to create interpretive materials for display and dissemination. Monitors archaeological projects to ensure sufficiency of fieldwork.
Conducts inventories of Forest cultural resources in areas of proposed Forest Service projects. Researchers reference materials such as State and National register files, historic documents, archaeological reports, maps and aerial photos, and interviews source individuals concerning project areas.
Insures that archaeology work assignments are carried out in safe, timely manner according to established standards and procedures.
Reviews work in progress to see that standards for pre-field research, survey design, site recording, graphics, and final report are being met.
Advises other employees on methods of cultural resource inventory and provides written instructions, research materials and supplies to all involved in planning and operation of natural resource activities. Generally serves as a crew work leader.

Specialized experience is defined as: Monitoring archaeological projects to ensure sufficiency of on-site surveying and recording; Preparing reports, such as cultural resource inventories, that document project’s environmental and cultural backgrounds, methodologies, and findings; Identifying and recording on maps or aerial photographs the exact locations and orientations of artifacts found. –OR
Successful completion of 1 year of graduate level education (18 semester/27 quarter hours), courses are to be related to the position to be filled. –OR
A combination of education and experience listed above.
