This is a Temporary Intern appointment within the Excepted service. Appointment under this Pathways Internship position will be made in not-to-exceed one year increments, with anticipated full time work during the summer season. This appointment may be extended based on funding, work levels and employee performance. However, there is no expectation of making this position permanent.
The purpose of the Pathways Internship Program is to provide interns with exposure to public service, enhance educational experience, and support educational goals. The program is formally structured to give interns the opportunity to work in positions related to their academic or career goals.
What are the eligibility requirements? Position serves as a Student Trainee (Park Guide) at Arches National Park, Division of Interpretation and Visitor Services. The Student Trainee will:
Assist in staffing information counter at the visitor center, serving as initial contact for visitors to the park, and providing information on park related activities and services.
Answer routine and repetitive visitor questions, and refer unfamiliar or non-routine questions to more senior staff members to learn from their answers.
Carry out recurring tasks including but not limited to stocking brochures and desk supplies, and keeping work areas organize and clean.
Assist with the fee collection operation at the park's entrance station.
Work is performed indoors at the visitor center as well as in outdoor areas resulting in exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, snow, wind and direct sunlight.
Standing for long periods of time, walking for distances up to ten miles daily, bending and lifting moderately heavy items in a repetitive motion is required. Mental stress and physical fatigue may occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of visitor center and entrance station work.
Student Trainee will be required to properly wear the NPS Service uniform.

Arches National Park is part of the Southeast Utah Group, which is comprised of two parks and two national monuments: Canyonlands National Park, Arches National Park, Hovenweep National Monument, and Natural Bridges National Monument.
Headquarters office for Arches National Parks are located in Moab, Utah. A town of approximately 6,000 residents sitting at a 4,000 foot elevation, Moab provides all basic amenities including doctors, dentists, hospital, schools (K-12), churches, and shopping.
Arches National Park (ARCH) contains the world's largest concentration of natural stone openings. Arches, spires, balanced rocks, canyons and fins of colorful red rocks are set against the dramatic backdrop of the La Sal Mountains, rising to over 12,000 feet in elevation.

1.National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.
2. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid state issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle.

QUALIFICATIONS: To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.
GS-02 level: three (3) months of general experience which is (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the positions, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Examples of general experience include, but are not limited to, selling merchandise, collecting and accounting for fees or monies, greeting visitors, disseminating information, providing directions, or other work which required dealing with people on a recurring basis; and that indicates the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of this position.
