Major duties include:
1. Application of accepted protocols to assess individuals for admission presenting acute mental conditions. Assessment may include, but not limited to gathering and documenting psychiatric and medical history, mental status examination and History and Physical(H&P).
2. Diagnostic description or formulation to guide appropriate acute and secondary treatment interventions.
3. Staff psychiatrists are ultimately responsible for all aspects of psychiatric care.
4. Staff psychiatrists will also cover emergency psychiatric services and psychiatric consults in medical units as needed during their tour.
5. Staff psychiatrists are able to perform and teach all of the services required in the practice of psychiatry to psychiatric residents. Educational experiences are also provided to appropriate health care personnel who seek training in mental health services (e.g. medical students, psychology and social work interns, physician assistant and nursing students, and nonpsychiatry medical residents).
Additional Functions
1. Staff psychiatrists supervise residents and/or Physician extenders in the process of evaluation and treatment of the psychiatric patient.
2. Evaluate the patient to assess changes in the physical and mental status. A progress note is written in the electronic patients chart. Notes also include the concurrence with notes written by the resident, and attending notes as appropriate.
3. Perform inpatient psychiatry evaluations, responsible for follow up treatment as the team leader including formulation of master treatment plans.
4. May participate in hospital committees, departmental and hospital in-service programs, and education programs of the department and the hospital. They are also involved in continuous quality improvement through peer review process.
5. May initiate or participate in an ongoing research activity. Faculty appointments to affiliated medical schools are available, as teaching medical students, residents and other disciplines is essential.
6. Job duties may require flexible schedules including 12 hour shifts ie alternating 7 days on with 7 days off.
