CTVHCS is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide preoperative Thoracic services at our facility in Temple.
Bargaining Unit Position
Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm, However flexible work hours to include weekends, holidays and extended hours maybe required.
The Physician Assistant (PA) will be assigned within the Thoracic Surgery Section, Surgical Service, at the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS) and will provide backup coverage to the Vascular and General Surgery Sections. The Chief, Thoracic Surgery Section is direct supervisor and the Associate Chief of Staff, Surgical Service is the second-line supervisor.
The PA functions as a defined level of autonomy, but not as an independent practitioner. The PA and supervising physician will be in daily contact with regard to patient care activities, and no independent care except for emergent situations will be rendered by the PA in the event no supervising physician is available. The supervising physician need not be physically present when patient care is being provided by the PA, but must be readily available for consultation by telephone or other electronic methods. The PA performs the full scope of duties as identified on authorized "privileges" provided by the CTVHCS Credential Office. Functioning within the Thoracic Surgery Section, the PA duties include, but are not limited to the following.

1. Conducts approved, merit-reviewed research projects; performs independent
research; serves as a contributing member of a research team or serves as a
member of a research committee; formulates research proposals & protocol
submissions for merit review; & develops publishable material for
appropriate professional journals or speaks to peer groups, &;
2. Effectively researches problems of major scaope; directs independent
research of considerable interest & value, where the research contribution
is highly productive & of such quality & originality as to have marked
the PA as a significant contributor to advances in patient care & services.
