Cuyahoga Valley National Park is recruiting for a few Biological Science Technicians to perform primarily plant work. Work is anticipated to begin in mid May. Additional positions may be filled through this recruitment for 120 days after the closing date if needed due to receipt of additional funding, increased workload, etc.

The selected biological technician will perform some or all of the following duties under the supervision of the park's Plant Ecologist and/or Exotic Plant Management Team Leader: (1) manage exotic plants cooperatively with staff and volunteers using manual and chemical methods; (2) propagate native plants at the park's native plant nursery; (3) revegetate disturbed sites using native plant materials; (4) collect native seeds and cuttings; (5) maintain and care for tools, equipment and supplies; (6) keep records of herbicide use and field work; (7) inventory and map the distribution and abundance of exotic plants using Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment; (8) use Geographic Information System (GIS) software to prepare maps and locate sites; and (9) use computer software to compile data, analyze data and prepare reports. The selected employee also may assist with general monitoring of the condition of vegetation, evaluating amphibian populations, assisting with deer and/or coyote surveys, and monitoring butterfly populations. One to two positions will be filled at the GS-05 level. Employees in temporary appointments with the National Park Service, including this appointment, are not eligible to receive non-competitive promotions.
AREA INFORMATION: Cuyahoga Valley National Park encompasses 33,000 acres along the banks of the Cuyahoga River between Cleveland and Akron in northeast Ohio. The park's mission is to preserve and protect the historic, scenic, natural, and recreational values of the Cuyahoga River Valley for public use and enjoyment. The park is dominated by deciduous forest but also supports meadows, wetlands, streams and agriculture. Summers are moderately warm with average temperatures in the 70's. Winters are moderately cold with average temperatures in the 20's and 30's. To be eligible for this position, you must possess the following experience and/or education no later than the closing date of this announcement, Thursday, March 30, 2017.
Experience -You must possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped you with the specific competencies to perform successfully the duties of the position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work such as assisting in the inventory and monitoring of natural resources, assisting in implementing portions of natural resource plans, assisting with habitat restoration work, assisting in collecting and organizing natural resources data for further analysis, etc. Experience may have been gained in the private or public sector and may have been paid or unpaid, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, Americorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
OR Education - Successful completion of four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or equivalent) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of work in a related field (such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, ecology or mathematics, etc.) and 6 semester hours in a directly related field such as natural resource management, botany, wildlife biology, ecology, etc. To qualify based on education, you MUST provide a copy of your transcripts or a list of college courses which includes your name, the school's name and address, title of each course, # of semester/quarter hours for each course, and grade for each course plus your class ranking and/or grade point average. Official transcripts will be requested if you are selected.
OR Combination of Specialized Experience and Education - A combination of specialized experience and education may be considered qualifying.
