The duties of the Medical Technician - Specimen Processing include:
Performs phlebotomy as required/directed following established procedures for identification/collection/labeling/processing.
Collects samples appropriate for tests requested by the physician using the correct preservatives, anticoagulants, collection intervals and/or times and patient conditions. Practices universal precautions including appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when performing phlebotomies and handling specimens. Operates equipment including performance/maintaining records of quality control and limited maintenance on lab equipment such as centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and electronic devices. Monitors and maintains supply records to include ordering, tracking, receipt and expiration dates. Initiates the receipt of specimens into the laboratory computer system (VISTA) utilizing ward order entry or multipurpose accessioning. Accomplishes all phases of processing and dispatch to include delivery of samples to the respective sections. Processes and prepares samples for reference testing and performs related computer functions relative to reference testing including special tests, generating work-list, and data entry of results. Processes meticulous legal documentation and technically sensitive packaging with supportive information of quality controls for drug screens. Communicates normal ranges, test results, panic values, test cost, availability and turn around time to requesting clinicians.PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires manual dexterity and recurring physical exertion such as standing for long periods of time, bending, reaching for supplies and lifting up to 15 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The work may involve regular and recurring risks and discomforts associated with work in a Clinical Laboratory (e.g. working with infectious material, irritant, noxious, flammable, carcinogenic reagents, and low level radioactive materials). For this reason the technician must take special safety precautions such as wearing protective clothing and masks and working with Fume and Biological Safety Hoods as directed by policy or by the Supervisor.
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm/1:00pm - 9:30pm, weekend and holiday rotations required
PROMOTION POTENTIAL: If this position has promotion potential, the selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: "Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-04) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.

EDUCATION: Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-05 level. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. COMBINATION EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. Determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level. Then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for GS-5. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-5. (Transcript required)
