The Community Living Center (CLC)/Palliative Care Unit Staff Nurse of the Nursing and Patient Care Services in VA San Diego Healthcare System is primarily located in VAMC La Jolla, CA. The CLC/Palliative Care Unit Staff Nurse is a professional registered nurse who is responsible for the evidence-based care of groups of patients' and who utilizes the nursing process to:
· provide a safe and supportive environment for patients, staff and others
· use and direct others to use equipment safely and appropriately
· incorporate the age, gender, cultural and learning needs of patients and families requiring complex planning and evaluation of care
· apply and direct others to apply infection control measure appropriately in delivering care
· identify and analyze problems which effect/impede patient care and initiate their resolution
· participate in coordinating patient care and collaborating with other disciplines/departments to achieve patient care outcomes
· adhere to ethical principles and nursing standards in delivering care
· serve as resource and guide to patients, families and other staff in providing patient care
· use effective communication skills with individuals and groups to achieve desired patient outcomes
· perform specialized treatments for patients as appropriate and apply & maintain appropriate competencies to do so

Physical Requirements: Heavy Lifting and Carrying (45 lbs and over); Straight Pulling, Pushing, Walking, Standing, Kneeling, Repeated bending, Keyboarding, Viewing computer screen (8 - 12 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands and legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors; Hearing (aid permitted); and Emotional/Mental stability.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
- U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
- The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted license/registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Experience Requirements: Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:
Preferred Experience: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); at least 1 year of current experience in patient palliative or hospice setting and management of pain and anxiety; ability to identify expected outcomes relevant to the individual and family, and with the interdisciplinary/healthcare team; ability to communicate effectively and resolve conflict constructively; BLS certification and End-of-Life Training (ELNEC).
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Note: Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions may be used to qualify for Federal employment.
