The Housekeeping Aid position is located in the Housekeeping Aid Department at Northern Navajo Medical Center, Shiprock, New Mexico. The major responsibility of this position is the maintenance of environmental sanitation as well as visual cleanliness throughout the hospital. This position reports to the Housekeeping Aid Supervisor.
The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3. · Vacuum, dust and mop floors, stairways, corridors, wards, utility rooms, offices, employee lounges, bathrooms and other assigned areas. Polish and buff floors. Strip and reapply floor sealer as necessary. Wash walls and window and glass partitions. Replenish paper supplies and soap dispensers.
· Clean patient rooms using proper antiseptic techniques. Empty waste baskets, cigarette urns and trash containers.
· Receive hospital linen deliveries. Maintain a system of linen distribution. Ensure quality of laundering are met. On occasion may mend or repair linen. Collect soiled linen and deliver to laundry or disposal area.
· Clean operating room and obstetric suites following strict procedures to prevent cross-contamination.
· Use prescribed protective cleaning procedures in isolation areas.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Candidates for this position will be evaluated under the federal wage system job grading standards. No specific length of experience is required. Applicants will be rated on the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.
Must be able to perform the following duties without more than normal supervision; vacuuming, sweeping, mopping floors, washing walls and windows and disposing of trash/waste.
Physical Effort: Moderate to heavy physical effort is required continuously in the performance of manual cleaning tasks. Frequently lifts or moves objects weight 40-50 pounds. Use of heavy powered cleaning equipment is required.
Working Conditions: The incumbent will work indoors and on occasion outdoors in areas that normally have adequate heat, light and ventilation. Occasionally, the Housekeeping Aid is exposed to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions and to injuries due to falls from ladders and risk of exposure to contagious diseases, infections, fumes, airborne particles, radiation and caustic chemicals. The Housekeeping Aid is required to follow universal precautions in the use of personal protective equipment when a task warrants the use.
Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which annual leave is earned.
· This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
