The Staff Psychiatrist works primarily in any or a combination of, the following settings: the Psychiatric Emergency Clinic (PEC), Emergency Department, Primary Care Mental Health Integration (PCMHI), and/or the outpatient Mental Health Clinics at the VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS). This is a staff psychiatrist position (board eligible or board certified) in the Psychiatry Service of the VASDHS Mental Health Care Line (MHCL).
The Psychiatry Service is located in the San Diego VA Medical Center (VAMC), a teaching hospital located adjacent to the University of California San Diego campus, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. It is a 256 bed, level 1a, tertiary care center that is dedicated to providing both primary and specialized outpatient health care, extended care, acute medical, surgical, intermediate and psychiatric care services with almost all major specialties and subspecialties represented. The facility has 38 acute psychiatric inpatient beds and 29 substance abuse rehabilitation beds.
Inpatient and outpatient care is available at the VAMC in La Jolla, while outpatient primary care services are available at the San Diego Mission Valley Outpatient Clinic and four other Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC's) located in Oceanside, Escondido, Chula Vista, and El Centro, California. The VASDHS MHCL serves veterans who reside in San Diego and Imperial Counties and provides general and specialized inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services. Inpatient treatment includes general treatment for acute psychiatric problems and a specialized program for alcohol and drug problems.
The Medical Center is closely affiliated with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine. In collaboration with this affiliate, the VASDHS Psychiatry Service oversees the training of psychiatry residents, fellows in psychiatry subspecialties and third- and fourth-year medical students rotating through the inpatient and outpatient settings. Attending physicians are expected to obtain and maintain UCSD faculty appointments, and may participate broadly in the teaching mission of the University. The Psychiatry Service is also committed to the advancement of knowledge and health care practices with member physicians playing a vital leadership role in basic science, clinical and health services research.
The responsibilities of this position will include the provision of clinical psychiatric services for the treatment of psychiatric and substance use disorders.
Functional Statement Title/#: Outpatient Staff Psychiatrist
This is a non-bargaining unit position.

Preferred Experience/Characteristics:
Incumbent prefers be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry and demonstrate evidence of excellence in medical administration, leadership, teaching, clinical practice, and research experience. Must qualify for academic appointment to the Department of Psychiatry in the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego.
Demonstrated excellence in delivery of clinical/patient care, experience completing medical record documentation timely; demonstrated leadership and administrative skills; high quality teaching skills; ability to make academic contributions; and ability to make contributions to VA research/development of novel evidence-based care for veterans.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
