The Nurse Practitioner (NP) functioning as the Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU) NP, Nurse II or Nurse III Grade is a professional registered nurse with advanced education from a university-based Nurse Practitioner program and appropriate experience who provides evidence-based care for a specific population of patients in the ASU. The setting includes, but is not limited to, the ASU at the La Jolla Medical Center. The NP has uses advanced assessment, planning and evaluating competencies, as well as approved standardized procedures, to provide family centered, pre-operative assessment of clients in preparation to undergo elective surgeries and procedures. This healthcare incorporates the patient's age, gender, culture and learning abilities in the treatment plan. The NP works collaboratively with many disciplines to provide care, including physicians, pharmacists, CRNAs and the anesthesiologists, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, dietitians, social workers, clerical and administrative staff, community agencies and others as appropriate. The NP demonstrates performance and leadership that is broad enough to assess the care for pre-surgical patients and serves as a facility content expert related to preoperative patient assessment and care.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, M-F, 8 hours a day, between 7:00am - 5:30pm. Nights, weekends, and holidays as required to meet patient care needs. Exact work schedule to be discussed during interview.
Functional Statement Title: Nurse Practitioner, Ambulatory Surgery Unit
Physical Requirements: Heavy Lifting (45 lbs and over); Straight Pulling, Pushing, Walking, Standing, Repeated bending (8 - 12 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands and legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; Both eyes required; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors; Hearing (aid permitted); Emotional/Mental stability; Keyboarding and reading computer screen (8-12 hours intermittently over scheduled shift).

Experience Requirements: Experience as a NP will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:
Preferred Experience:
1. MSN and specialty certification as NP required.
2. Holds California NP furnishing privileges and DEA number.
3. Two-three years NP experience completing peri-operative assessments in the Ambulatory Surgery Setting.
4. Able to performs pre-operative history/physical exams independently for all non-emergent Ambulatory Surgery patients, including reviewing medical records, monitoring lab/diagnostic tests, writing treatment & medication orders as appropriate, responding to telephone inquiries from patient, family members as well as providers and outside physicians/care givers. Incorporates the patient's age, gender, culture and learning abilities in the treatment plan.
5. Assesses the need for medications and prescribes them according to approved standardized procedures in case of pre-operative illness and/or other medical condition(s) requiring medications/intervention prior to surgery.
6. Demonstrated the ability to work successfully with healthcare team, including physicians, pharmacists, CRNAs and the anesthesiologists, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, dietitians, social workers, clerical and administrative staff and community agencies to achieve desired patient outcomes.
7. Demonstrates performance and leadership that is broad enough to assess the care for pre-surgical patients and serves as a facility content expert related to preoperative patient assessment and care.
