Under the direction of the Radiology Administrator the incumbent will independently perform routine to moderately complex radiographic and computed tomography examination procedures. These exams are achieved by using diagnostic x-ray equipment such as fluoroscopic units, direct digital units, general diagnostic units, and computed tomography scanner. Performs computerized tomography of the head, neck, spine, chest, and body. Performs special procedure angiographic and interventional examinations. These exams are performed with and without the use of contrast materials. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies to bring about proper diagnosis and treatment. The Advanced DRT/ CT Technologist duties will be split between General Radiography/Fluoroscopy studies and CT (50 percent General Radiography / 50 percent CT.
a. Technologist meets the education requirements set forth in facility guidelines to include BLS certification.
b. Accurately operates a wide variety of imaging equipment.
c. Technologist works under the supervision of Radiology Administrator and rotates all responsibilities within the CT section.
d. Knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and physiology including location, appearance, and functioning of the major and minor systems susceptible to radiographic illumination, and knowledge of changes to systems and organs caused by common medical and surgical diseases.
e. Performs all aspects of CT imaging.
f. Performs CT Angiography of the Circle of Willis, Carotids, Abdominal Aortas and Run-Off's.
g. Incumbent will work with the radiologist/physician as a member of the surgical /CT team.
h. Technologist is required to maintain competence in Venipuncture and to maintain compliance with facility guidelines.
i. Prepares contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist that are used in CT, to include CT Angiography and other exams.
j. Technologist must be familiar with policies and procedures for practicing radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self. This is achieved by optimizing technical factors and ensuring all policies and procedure are adhered to.
k. Technologist acquires and maintains knowledge in CT dose optimization and the factors that directly affect radiation dose from the CT scanner to the patient.
l. Technologist must utilize lead aprons, lead gloves, and lead shields when exposed to radiation. Adheres to Radiation Safety guidelines, properly determines applying technical factors to ensure ALARA dose optimization, positioning, required views, etc. to produce and satisfy requirements for diagnostic imaging and CT exams.
m. The employee must also be aware of and practice the safety policies and procedures of the Medical Center, and participate in quality assurance activities as directed.
n. Performs both daily and monthly quality control, daily required calibration, and records appropriate performance as required by facility policy.
o. Technologist is competent and educated in all service policies pertaining to the technologist and their assigned work section.
p. Technologist receives and interprets all radiology requests for accuracy, appropriateness; date desired and maintains a thorough knowledge of the ordering process in CPRS.
q. Performs and completes imaging studies within the established guidelines for stat, pre-op, urgent, and routine exams.
r. Technologist works with CT schedule to assure timely accomplishment of assigned workload, making day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities and additional assignments.
s. Applies Infection Control practices and procedures for patients and staff, as mandated by the Medical Center and Radiology Service Infection Control policies.
t. Maintains adequate supplies and pharmaceuticals used in the department. Responsible for stocking and inventory of all supplies, notifying supervisor when supplies are not available and monitoring expiration dates to ensure all items are within compliance.
u. Use independent judgment and possess the ability to vary exams or treatment procedures as needed to compensate for patient's individual medical conditions and body habitus.
Team member works independently, under the direction of the Radiology Administrator; CT Technologist confers with Radiologists, on more difficult problems. On the more unusual and complex assignments, works closely and confers with radiologists on special techniques. Work is evaluated on a spot-check basis for achievement of objectives.

Physical Requirements:
DRT is considered a vocation that requires "medium" strength according the the Department of Labor. Examples of the medium strength required by DRTs are as follows:
Standing, walking, squatting, bending and sitting, changing from one position to the other frequently throughout the day
Sitting at a desk and using upper extremities to reach, grasp, and place papers, charts and binders
Reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling: 1-10lbs constantly, 10-25lbs frequently, 20-50lbs occassionally
Basic Requirements:
- Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
- Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R).
- Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology.
- Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
- English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Preferred Experience:
DRTs perform procedures and examinations in hospitals or clinics under the direction of radiologists and other medical officers. The objective of the examinations and procedures is to produce radiographic studies that are used in medical diagnosis and interpreted by medical officers to locate injuries, foreign bodies, pathological conditions, or lesions within the body. They prepare and administer contrast media and medications in accordance with State and Federal regulations. All DRTs must be knowledgeable in Computerized Radiography (CR) and Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS).
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, includingvolunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps,AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic;religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build criticalcompetencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training andexperience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifyingexperience, including volunteer experience.
Grade Determinations:
In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates:
(a) Experience. At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
(b) Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments:
1. Advanced DRT. Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex radiographic procedures. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
a. Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures;
b. Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers;
c. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure;
d. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography;
e. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions; and
f. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
