Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist will work in cooperative collaboration with team members, health professionals; volunteers, others in VA facilities, and community agencies to help Veterans recognize and resolve their needs. The counseling and therapeutic services provided by the Veteran Center range from routine to complex and include suicide prevention, crisis intervention, short and long-term treatment with clients experiencing readjustment problems. Clients encountered and problems exhibited necessitates a variety of psychological, rehabilitation, marriage and family counseling, and mental health techniques including, but not limited to, individual, group, conjoint, vocational, educational, substance abuse, and readjustment counseling. The Therapist is responsible for providing Veterans with community outreach, counseling, therapy, treatment, direct services, and referral to VA services and community resources. Some duties required are clinical practice with Veteran clients which includes:
Screening/assessment of clients
Treatment planning and goal setting
Referral to service providers
Crisis intervention
Education/health promotion
Coordination of non-institutional and institutional services
Individual/group counseling

Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work are generally minor. The work is primarily sedentary in climate controlled clinical and administrative settings. The work involves walking (3 hours), prolong standing (6-8 hours) bending (2 hours), and some lifting of light items (under 15 pounds, such as files, computer diskettes) lifting of miscellaneous equipment (such as computer equipment, audiovisual equipment) climbing stairs, sitting for long periods of time (such as on an airplane, automobile, attending lectures, etc.) and ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. The physical demands of the work requires use of fingers; moderate walking and standing; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; hearing aid permitted; clear speech; emotional stability; moderate duty.

GS-11 is the full performance level grade for GS-101 Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist series and requires completion of a minimum of 1 year of post master's degree experience in the field of health care marriage and family therapy work in addition to the education requirements. Also, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist must demonstrate Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA). This vacancy announcement is for recruitment at the GS-11 full performance level only.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA):
1) Knowledge of human development throughout the lifespan, interventions based on research and theory, family and system interaction, formal diagnostic criteria, risk assessment, evidence-based practice and assessment tools.2) Ability to independently assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members, and the knowledge to formulate, implement, and re-evaluate a treatment plan through continuous assessment identifying the patient's problems, strengths, readiness to change, external influences and current events surrounding the origins and maintenance of the presenting issue, and interactional patterns within the client system. This includes the utilization of testing measures where appropriate.
3) Ability to provide counseling and/or psychotherapy services to individuals, groups, couples and families in a culturally competent manner that facilitates change through restructuring and reorganizing of the client system.
4) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, colleagues, and other professionals in collaboration throughout treatment regarding clinical, ethical and legal issues and concerns.
5) Knowledge and understanding of existing relevant statutes, case law, ethical codes, and regulations affecting professional practice of marriage and family therapy.
6) Ability to provide orientation, training and consultation to new Marriage and Family Therapists including clinical oversight of Marriage and Family Therapist graduate students, and/or provide supervision to pre-licensure Marriage and Family Therapists.
7) Skill in the use of computer software applications for drafting documents, data management, maintaining accurate, timely and thorough clinical documentation, and tracking quality improvements
