VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. The incumbent performs a pre-anesthetic patient assessment based on patient interview, patient history, lab results, and type of surgical procedure to be performed. Patient assignments are made per the Chief of Anesthesiology or designated person.
Select and administer pre-anesthetic medication according to established protocol.
Request and evaluate pertinent laboratory studies, pulmonary function studies, including blood gases, respiratory therapy, and other appropriate studies under established protocol.
Insert intravenous catheters, according to established protocol.
Insert arterial catheters; perform puncture for blood gases.
Utilize all current techniques in monitoring.
Perform endotracheal intubation and extubation.
Select and administer anesthetic, medications and adjunct drugs appropriate to the individual patient's condition and procedure (surgical or non-surgical) within established protocols in the operating suite and any off-site location (ie. Endoscopy, Radiology, Cardiology, MRI,etc.).
Manage fluid, blood and electrolyte therapy within a medical care plan.
Initiate and modify therapies, including drug and pain therapy within established protocols.
Examine patients in post-anesthesia recovery and other hospital units to assess patient's reaction to anesthetic management. Identify any complications or abnormal patient responses to anesthesia or to adjunctive medication and implement appropriate management techniques.
Assist in the treatment and management of emergency airway problems as needed throughout the hospital. Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation by performing airway management including endotracheal intubations when necessary.
Provide anesthetic consultation to physicians, nurses, and other hospital staff as necessary.
Make post-operative rounds and record on the patient's permanent record the presence or absence of anesthesia-related-complications.
Take an active role through the attendance and participation in the departmental in-service program.

Functional Statement Title/#: Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) Functional Statement
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The CRNA may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The CRNA may occassionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The CRNA must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and able to shift priorities based on patient needs. He/she must complete annual Employee Health requirements.
Basic Requirements:
· U.S. citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
· Education:
o Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commision (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
o Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. The AANA has compiled current listings of approved training institutions, which are published annually in the December issue of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Journal. The American Hospital Association in their Guide to the Health Care Field also publishes listings of approved training institutions annually in August.
· Registration: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
· Certification: Certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
· Nurse II None beyond the basic requirements
· Nurse III - In addition to meeting the requirements for Entry Level, the CRNA has had progressively responsible experience in the administration of anesthetics as indicated in the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below. These individuals must demonstrate the ability to participate in a program for nurse anesthesia care and demonstrate knowledge of anesthetizing locations, methods, equipment and procedures. At this level, the CRNA has experience in the administration of anesthetics that has demonstrated the nurse anesthetists ability to participate in team programs that are technically challenging and/or complicated. Typically candidates can demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities of Full Performance Level within 2 years from entering the occupation
