The Birmingham VAMC is recruiting for (1) Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) position within the Sleep Disorders Center of the Neurology section. The selectee will display proficiency and perform at a level of excellence in all Sleep diagnostic and treatment procedures and other related procedures in accordance with the guidelines and protocols established by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, BVAMC Sleep Disorders Center, and procedures of the Birmingham VA Hospital. The selectee will be able to interact fully with the patient and physician to diagnose sleep disorders including those that are uncommon or rare. He/she will be able to conduct full sleep studies including primarily daytime and as needed overnight studies with and without extended EEG monitoring, and evaluate the relationship of events, sleep stages, and possible medical conditions which influence or result from events occurring during sleep, perform positive airway pressure therapy desensitization assessments, download home polysomngraphic studies, overscore all polysomnographic studies, set/download/troubleshoot and adjust positive airway pressure devices, prepare and complete documentation for reports. The selectee anticipates problems likely to occur during the sleep study and is able to prepare for such situations, suggest changes in established procedures, or recommend alternative courses of action. The selectee maintains polysomnography documentation, completes polysomnography reports, and maintains/cleans polysomnographic equipment per the standard operating procedures of the BVAMC Sleep Center.
Work Schedule: Variable shifts. The selectee will be expected to work one of the following tours: Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm or Monday-Friday 6:30am-3:00pm.

Physical Requirements: Satisfactory physical examination as determined by the Employee Health Unit upon appointment only. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019 (http://vaww1.va.gov/ohrm/HRLibrary/Dir-Policy.htm). Functional requirements include light lifting under 15 lbs, light carrying 15-44 lbs, walking and standing and standing for up to 8 hours, use of rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability to read type written characters (glasses permitted), ability to hear the whispered voice (hearing aid permitted), repeated bending for up to 8 hours, etc.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Preferred Experience: (1) Registered with the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT). (2) A minimum of at least 2 years recent experience as a MIT-(Polysomnography).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
GRADE DETERMINATIONS: In addition to the above basic requirements, applicants at the GS-07 grade levels must also possess the below additional requirements.
For The GS-08 Grade Level (Full Performance Level): At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled. This would be experience which provided a knowledge of the more complex procedures as well as knowledge of the uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders. Examples of Specialized experience but are not limited to: Interacting fully with the patient and physician to diagnose sleep disorders including those that are uncommon or rare; Conducting full sleep studies including overnight studies and evaluate the relationship of events, sleep stages, and possible medical conditions which influence or result from events occurring during sleep; Anticipating problems likely to occur during the sleep study and prepare for such situations, making changes in established procedures, or recommending alternative courses of action; mentoring lower graded technicians.
Certification- No certification or registration is required. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is desirable.
