The goal of the NHDP is to arrest or prevent the deformity and disability that are the hallmarks of Hansen's Disease (a.k.a. leprosy) through outpatient care and rehabilitation, training and education, and intramural research. In addition to the clinical programs in Baton Rouge, the NHDP coordinates outpatient care for Hansen's disease patients throughout the US via contractually funded clinics and private physician offices. The NHDP conducts professional education programs for health care workers, providing information not typically provided in standard medical curricula. The NHDP also operates laboratory research programs dedicated to improved detection, treatment and prevention of Hansen's Disease UHD) and its associated effects.
