The Surgical Service Department at the Seattle VA Medical Center has a full time Physician Assistant position in neurosurgery. The primary responsibilities of the Physician Assistant (PA) are to provide services under the supervision of neurosurgeon for veterans, managing all inpatients pre and post-operatively onwards.
Duties will include, but not limited to:
Admit and discharge patients to the Neurosurgery Service.
Perform initial History and Physical examination on inpatients and outpatients. The supervising physician will review and sign all admitting inpatient History and Physician exams.
Provide ongoing outpatient and inpatient care for assigned patients.
Perform periodic physical examinations on nursing home and domiciliary residents.
Screen out patients to determine need for further care, including x-ray image interpretation for new consultations and follow up care.
Order and interpret diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms (EKGs).
Carryout health promotion and disease prevention activities.
Draw blood specimens for testing, and performing other comparable lab procedures.
Initiate and expedite requests for consultations, and schedule special tests and studies.
Obtain consent, and document procedures performed for which the PA is responsible.
Make daily rounds to observe and record each patient's medical progress; update and summarize medical records; change orders when appropriate, and notify the responsible physician of significant changes in the patient's condition.
Make interim summaries of the patient's medical record.
Complete discharge summaries (supervising physician must co-sign).
Dictate notes on procedures performed for which the PA is responsible.
Provide education and counseling of patients and families in prevention care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
Basic Life Support per organizational policy.
Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Day Shift, on call as needed
Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.
Basic Requirements: Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
Certification: Hold a certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment.
Education or Training: The candidate must meet one of the following:
(1) A bachelors degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or
(2) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelors degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or
(3) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.
Preferred Experience: Minimum of 2 years experience as a physician assistant.
