The Surgical Service Department at the Seattle VA Medical Center has two full time Physician Assistant positions in the orthopedic section. The primary responsibilities of the Physician Assistant (PA) are to provide services under the supervision of orthopedic physicians for veterans, managing all inpatients pre and post-operatively on wards.
Duties will include, but not limited to:
· Assessing, planning, implementing, documenting and evaluating patient care;
· Shares clinical expertise with professional and supportive personnel;
· Writes orders, discharge summaries, progress notes, and consult requests;
· Prescribes medications;
· Assess patients in the outpatient clinic;
· Provides education to Veteran, family members and significant others;
· Works as a member of an interdisciplinary team;
· Must maintain certification and licensure as a PA;
· Must maintain certification in Basic Life Support;
· Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.
Basic Requirements:
Certification
Hold a certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment.
Education or Training
The candidate must meet one of the following:
(1) A bachelors degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or
(2) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelors degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or
(3) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.
Preferred Experience
Minimum of 2 years experience as a physician assistant. Orthopedic experience as an physician assistant preferred.
