The New England Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) has a long tradition of excellence in focusing on research, education and clinical activities concerning the care of aging Veterans. It is located at both the Boston VA Healthcare system and Bedford VAMC. The New England GRECC's mission is to conduct research and develop and disseminate models of care that optimize cognitive and physical function of aging veterans. The Bedford GRECC site is seeking a Physician Scientist. The Bedford GRECC site has a long tradition of focusing on care for patients with Alzheimer's Disease and related disorders. In addition to the GRECC, the Bedford VAMC includes strong research programs in health services and mental health. Currently, the Bedford GRECC location consists of a dynamic group of physician-researchers and scientists who conduct clinical and basic science research on a variety of aging related topics. We are seeking a clinician scientist that has interests and expertise in the care of older adults that will build off of this ongoing work within the GRECC or build bridges to the other research programs at the Bedford VAMC. The GRECC provides a wide variety of educational programs for physicians, psychologists, rehabilitative therapists, social workers, and other allied healthcare providers at multiple stages of training. Candidates for this position should be highly motivated to conceive, plan, and facilitate the implementation of innovative programs that enhance the care of older Veterans. The ability to work across disciplines and with local and national VA collaborators is critical to the GRECC mission.
Candidates will be considered from a broad range of academic interests, from clinical program development and clinical research to bench research. Candidates should have a proven track record of academic excellence, independent grant funding and the ability to lead both clinical and research programs.

The incumbent will serve as the Physician Scientist for the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) of the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial (ENRM) VA Hospital located in Bedford, Massachusetts. The incumbent, under the direction of the New England GRECC Director, will develop clinical programs consistent with the GRECC guidelines. The duties of this position will include but are not limited to:
· performs clinical services;
· conducts independent research in a field related to the clinical goals of GRECC, and the VA Research and Development program;
· collaborates with the Associate Director for Research and Associate Director for Education and Evaluation in fulfilling the programmatic goals;
· completes performance evaluations, proficiency reports, qualifications, and competence of staff, time and attendance requirements;
· makes recommendations for staffing, space, and other resources for GRECC research/clinical staff associated with the research program and clinical demonstration projects;
· serves as a liaison with the academic medical centers;
· provides advice and guidance on research/clinical programs;
· assists in the review of publications, scientific exhibits, and public information releases of GRECC research activities;
· prepares and submits communications, reports, correspondence, and grant applications necessary to conduct research in the GRECC and the R&D Program;
· responsible for financial management of grants awarded to conduct clinical research at the Bedford VA, its academic affiliates, and regional academic medical centers; and
· communicates the results of new studies by writing and publishing original scientific papers, and presents data at scientific meetings.
