The Medical Technician Phlebotomy will be working at the Greenville VA Healthcare Center, Greenville, North Carolina. This position is located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS).
Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
· Performs technical work in one or more areas such as chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, phlebotomy, rapid testing or microbiology;
· Conducts tasks related to specimens to include performing collection, ensuring accurate and complete labeling and accessioning, distributing items to appropriate areas of the lab, running item through the centrifuge and de-capping machines, and storing analyzed specimen in racks according to day and lab number;
· Processes specimens through primary analyzers in chemistry, hematology, serology, rapid testing, and coagulation;
· Conducts approved waived to moderate complexity testing B-hcg (beta Human Chorionic Gonadotropin), sedimentation rate, Flu PCR, STREP, point of care/ancillary testing (e.g. glucose, BNP (Brain Natriuretic Peptide), Blood Gas, and PT-INR (Prothrombin Time) by hand held devices);
· Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors, which influence test results;
· Maintains the laboratory facilities, equipment, and supplies ensuring safety and efficiency of laboratory operations;
· Keeps complete and accurate records of all test results;
· Provides clerical support, i.e., answering phones, filing, etc., in various areas of the laboratory; and,
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
WORK SCHEDULE: MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY, 8:00 AM 4:30 PM AND INCLUDES WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-4) in Federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings and/or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques of a phlebotomist. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week. -OR-
Education: Successful completed a full four (4) year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position being filled which may include clinical hematology, clinical laboratory practices, phlebotomy practicum, clinical microbiology, clinical practicum or special topics in the Medical Laboratory Technology field. This education must have been obtained in an accredited technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation is the normal prerequisite. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. -OR-
Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience that may be used to meet total experience requirements. This education must include courses directly related to the work of the position (as described above). You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
· Knowledge of Laboratory Principles, concepts and methodology including quality control sufficient to perform daily start up testing.
· Knowledge of phlebotomy principles, concepts and methodology to obtain a broad range of laboratory samples, to include sterile and aseptic techniques use of lab instrument/equipment.
· Knowledge and skill in the use of personal computers and various programs.
· Ability to effectively communicate orally in order to obtain or discuss complex and sensitive information and to instruct patients on how to provide proper specimens.
· Knowledge in medical terminology in order to exercise the proper course of action, and then exercise the proper task sequences for completing the work along with little to no supervision.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring light lifting, walking, bending, or standing. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of the workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, such as in a laboratory, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity, such as exceptional hand/eye coordination or color differentiation.
