The Registered Nurse is assigned to the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit (7C) and is responsible for applying the nursing process to the care of Veteran patients admitted to the VA Syracuse Healthcare System. Veterans who need individual intensive crisis-oriented assessment and intervention for the treatment of a mental illness or substance use disorder may be admitted to the inpatient psychiatry program. This program provides the Veterans an individualized care plan delivered by a multidisciplinary team of mental healthcare professionals. The Inpatient Team works with the Veterans and his/her family to reduce psychiatric symptomatology; to restore the Veteran's ability to function independently; to facilitate the development of skills to reduce the need for readmission in the future; and to develop an outpatient linkage to support the Veteran's further recovery. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Work Schedule: Day/Night, every other weekend - Tour of Duty will be discussed at interview.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stopping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects maybe required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. As a condition of employment, a pre-employment physical with random drug screening will be required.
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:
