Performs digital radiography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) of the head (including Spectroscopy), neck spine, chest and body. These exams are performed with and without use of contrast materials. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies so that proper diagnosis and treatment may be effectuated.
a. Schedules exams in a manner so as to optimize all of the radiographic equipment including the MRI scanner times while maintaining a flexibility to allow for emergency cases. This requires the prioritization of scheduled patients as well as the ability to accommodate the extreme emergency patient who may need immediate emergency surgery, etc.
b. Confers with radiologists to determine requirements of non-standard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, etc., to produce and satisfy requirements of MRI scanning. Schedules patients for examinations. Notifies radiologist or requesting provider of examinations requiring their immediate attention.
c. Performs routine and complex neuroangiography, including spine, head and neck studies utilizing highly sophisticated imaging equipment such as pressure injectors, post processing using 2 & 3-D workstation, patient monitors, etc. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies.
d. Performs routine and complex peripheral and visceral angiography of the abdominal systems and extremities. These angiographic studies include renal, hepatic, mesenteric, aortic, femoral, etc. The exams involve the use of highly sophisticated imaging equipment such as pressure injectors, post processing using 2 & 3-D workstations, patient monitors, etc. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic or therapeutic studies of the vascular systems.
e. Works with the radiologist as a member of the radiographic team. Must assist and anticipate the needs of the radiologists during the examination. Must be continuously on the alert for the patient's condition (the alertness of the individual is essential to prevent contamination, recognize patient reactions, anticipate technique factor difficulties, etc.)
f. Prepares contrast materials that are used in MRI and general exams. Improper use or administration of the contrast materials run the risk of patient mortality and, therefore, it is essential that a thorough understanding of the contrast material usage is possessed by those who prepare it. In addition, must be continuously on the alert to the patient's condition and other disorders. Reactions on the part of the patient require immediate attention so that hann does not come to the patient. Is certified to insert IV needles for administration of contrast material when necessary.
g. Assure compliance to radiation regulations. The incumbent must be aware of and practice the safety policies and procedures of the medical center, and participate in quality assurance activities as directed.
h. Uses the PACs system for retrieval of images to be printed to a laser camera. Also, must have knowledge to load and unload laser camera.
i. Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. This includes patient logbooks, requisition and editing of patient exams in the Radiology Information System (RIS), copying of films, etc.
j. Properly identifies patient through the RIS interface identifier and left/right markers. The radiographer must be certain that the patient I.D. band and the request are identical. Asks each patient to verbally confirm his or her name and social security last four numbers.
k. Assures that MRI patients are screened in advance for any contraindicating conditions per Radiology Service policy. Responsible to explain exams to competent patients so that patients understand what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, are possible.
I. Responsible for stocking and inventory of all MRI and general imaging supplies and related material.
m. Continually reviews and recommends new developments in MRI and MRA. ls continually on the alert to improve quality of examinations utilizing any new technologies available. The purpose of this review is to provide the physicians and patients with the best possible films and scans for diagnostic purposes.
n. Responsible for assuming various rotating schedules as determined by the Supervisor and Chief of Radiology Service
o. Responsible for capturing digital and computerized images, processes images and verifies patient and exam information before transmitting them to the Picture Archive System (PACS) per department protocols. This procedure requires the technologist to have a general knowledge of computer operations. Image manipulation and transmission is critical in digital and computerized radiography.
Work Schedule: Late shift Noon - 8PM w/call during the week, weekends, and holidays.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The employee works and functions in the medical center in a safe manner, including infection control and the correct operation of equipment.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
CITIZENSHIP: Citizen of the United States.
CERTIFICATION: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Advanced certification indicates that the technologist has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. (Include Copy of Certification)
EDUCATION: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology. (Transcripts Required)
IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
GS-09 GRADE DETERMINATION: Must possess at least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade of Federal Service (GS-8)which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of this position. Specialized experience is defined as having knowledge of super conducting magnets, the physics of superconducting magnets, and how they relate to the human anatomy in medical imaging. Must be educated in the safety factors governing a magnetic environment that patients, visitors and equipment enter into. Must have specific specialized knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and how it relates to the soft tissues and vessels of the human body. Must also have specialized knowledge in the radio-frequency surface coils required for each specific anatomical area to be imaged.

KSA #1: Ability to balance the needs of the patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
KSA #2: Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
KSA #3: Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
KSA #4: Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
KSA #5: Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous skills, and universal precautions.
KSA #6: Knowledgeable in pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients
