This position is located on a Forest Service Research unit and performs duties in support of the wildlife science program.
This vacancy announcement is for one or more locations throughout the Rocky Mountain Research Station. The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs.

TEMPORARY APPOINTMENT: Some positions will have varying work schedules. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time and will involve working weekends or irregular work hours. Occastional travel may be required. Some positions involve work that requires travel away from the official duty location to remote worksites within commuting distance (49 miles).
Positions will be filled as a temporary appointment up to 6 months.

Individually, or as part of a team, supports wildlife community studies. Conducts field surveys of birds, mammals, or herpetofauna requiring specialized experience identifying focal species. Performs assignments which involve sampling habitat features associated with wildlife species using various measuring techniques and equipment. Collects data following prescribed protocols. Identifies multiple species by sight or sound, often with the aid of specialized equipment. May assist in capturing and marking focal species. Navigates on public and private road systems without direct supervision. Communicates with crew leader or supervisor on a routine basis, as directed, to update the status of work projects. Locates off-road study sites using compass, topographic maps and/or GPS unit. Records field data in a safe and legible manner. Enters field data onto a computer database. May assist in proofing and editing data forms and databases. Maintains field equipment and vehicles in good working condition. As required, camps at remote locations on National Forest lands.
NOTE: The incumbent must have normal color vision, normal hearing and have a valid state driver’s license.

GS-05: (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level.
Specialized experience is defined: Performed steps or sections of procedural assignments in providing technical support in a wildlife management field environment, including conducting wildlife and plant surveys. Demonstrated experience trapping and handling birds and other wildlife. Used designated well-established guidelines to compute, compile, and present data in reports for a biological or scientific program. Participated in wildlife assignments, performing such tasks as collecting, organizing, and analyzing wildlife-related data. Kept detailed records of findings or results of biological science tests and procedures. -OR
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelors degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in a combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. The successful completion of a full course of study of at least 12 months in a school for clinical laboratory technicians may be substituted for the 1 year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level for positions involving microbiology and biochemistry technician work. -OR
A combination of education and experience listed above.
