The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) is seeking a highly qualified Registered Nurse to assume the responsibilities for the Sterile Processing Service (SPS). The incumbent ensures the practice of SPS is consistent with VA Standards, such as, VA Handbook 7176, VISN 18/22 policies and external standards, such as Joint Commission of Accreditation of Health care Organizations (JC), AORN, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). This position plays a leadership role in ongoing systematic evaluation and improvement of quality and effectiveness of SPS processes and practices. The incumbent assesses educational needs of the SPS staff and implements an education plan to meet these needs. This position collaborates with all clinical and service lines. The Sterile Processing-Nurse Manager works collaboratively with Nurse Managers, Infection Control, Performance Improvement, and Patient Safety in assessing, monitoring, developing and assisting with implementing corrective action plans for instrument processing, decontamination, sterilization, biological monitoring and high level disinfecting monitoring.
· Performs the administrative and personnel management functions relative to the staff supervised.
· Participates in assessing the decontamination, high level disinfection/sterilization process inside and outside of SPS to include reprocessing of all reusable medical equipment (RME).
· Responsible for assessing, monitoring, developing and implementing corrective action plans for instrument processing, reprocessing to RME, decontamination, sterilization, biological monitoring and high level disinfecting monitoring.
· Participates in assessing the environment, analyzing trends, transmitting data, communicating ideas, developing and proposing policies, initiating programs and systems and collaborating in the management of resources.
· Knowledgeable in areas of patient care practices, asepsis, disinfection/sterilization, adult education, communication and program administration.
· Demonstrates expertise and comprehensive understanding of the decontamination/sterilization process as well as current manufacturers' instructions of reprocessing RMEs.
· Analyzes and advises on supply preparation and decontamination/sterilization considerations.
· Interprets logistics data and characteristics to determine areas of potential improvement; identifies economic and efficient uses of preparation and decontamination and requirements.
· Develops budgetary and financial planning data in support of SPS functions.
· Recommends and monitors the facility's sterile processing department.
· Ensures that staff are trained and fully comply with the provisions of safety regulations.
· Develops performance standards and monitors for compliance.
· Exercises a comprehensive knowledge of preparation/decontamination and sterilization principles and practices.
· Has practical knowledge of industry practices, procedures, regulations, requirements, techniques, and training related to preparation and decontamination programs.
· Responsible for the organization's preparation for surveys/inspections pertaining to SPS operations by a government or non-governments agencies, i.e. Joint Commission, SOARS.
This person will report directly to the Associate Director of Patient Care Services.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday; Administrative hours with expectation of off tour coverage as needed.
