This is a non-temporary student
internship opportunity and the Intern may be considered for conversion to a
term or permanent appointment within 120 days of completion of degree
requirements provided they: Successfully completed an academic course of study
with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0; Complete a minimum of 640
hours of work experience before completing degree requirements; Meet the
qualification requirements for the position to which they are converted; and
Maintain acceptable performance. If converted to a term or permanent position,
this position will have a full performance level of a GL-09. Conversion is not guaranteed.
These positions are being filled under the Pathway's Internship Program in
the excepted service. The ProRanger Program is located in College Station, Texas and is an
academic as well as a paid internship. The ProRanger
Program is seeking students looking for an opportunity to gain experience as a Park
Ranger Protection trainee and to provide them with exposure to public
service, enhance educational experience, and support educational goals. The Interns
will annually participate in a ProRanger course that focuses on learning about
the mission and functions of the NPS and the role of law enforcement in
National Parks located at either Texas A&M or Prairie View A&M Universities and
will be assigned to a National Park area and be employed as a trainee NPS Park
Ranger (Protection) during summer months.

During the summer months, the students will work full-time, 40 hours per week at a National Park Service area as a full-time trainee Park Ranger-Protection. Duties will include assisting in preliminary investigations of felonies and other crimes and violations of park rules and public use and safety requirements, and in crowd control; working with other law enforcement personnel in investigating crimes and accidents, interviewing witnesses, interrogating suspects, and gathering evidence at minor crime and accident scenes; informing visitors about park facilities and resources, performing some backcountry patrols; may serve as a member of the park incident management team; operates vehicles and equipment used in general park operation.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: Park assignment duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Performs rigorous assignments, often in isolated outdoor environments while exposed to severe weather conditions. High stress situations may occur when dangerous persons must be physically confronted, subdued, and apprehended. Physical fitness requirements must be met prior to and on a continuing basis during employment. Long periods of surveillance work may be required in cramped or unpleasant locations and under unpleasant conditions.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: College Station, TX is a city in Brazos County,
Texas with over one hundred thousand residents. It is located in the center of
the region known as the Texas Triangle. It is 90 miles (140 kilometers)
northwest of Houston and 87 miles (140 km) northeast of
Austin. Summers are hot and humid. Winters are moderate. Housing is
plentiful with prices for buying or renting being reasonable. There is no
Government quarters available. Retail service, professional and medical
services, churches, hospitals, and excellent educational facilities are
available, including a multitude of recreational facilities.
The City of Prairie View, Texas is in Waller County, Texas, and part of the HoustonThe WoodlandsSugar Land metropolitan area. The population was 5,576 at the 2010 census. The current estimated population is 6,197.Nestled in Northern Waller County, along Texas Highway 290. The city is only minutes from Houston, and in the path to Austin and College Station, Texas. is the home of Prairie View A & M University.
No government housing is available.
Requirements
1. The duration of a Pathways appointment counts toward completion of the probationary period.
2. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.
3. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties.
4. You will be expected to travel to park assignments.
5. While in paid status, you may be assigned to work nights, early mornings,
rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends.
Conditions of employment:
**Must successfully complete the Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program
(SLETP) for NPS Park Rangers by entry on duty date.
**Those selected must participate in the NPS Visitor and Resource Protection ProRanger
Program class. This class is specific to the Pro Ranger program and is offered
at Texas A&M and Prairie View A&M Universities. You must be located in College Station, TX or Prairie View, TX in order to attend classes.
**Must be at least 21 years of age.
**Must be 37 years of age or younger by conversion to permanent position. Once
permanent, this position is covered by the special retirement provisions for
the Federal Law Enforcement Officers and has a mandatory retirement age of 57.
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and have not reached their 37th
birthday by the date of appointment; or, if over age 37, selectee must have
been or currently be covered by special retirement provisions and be able to
complete at least 20 years of coverage by age 57. If you are a veteran who is
eligible for veterans preference ("preference eligible"), you may be
eligible for a waiver of the maximum entry age for this position if you are
otherwise qualified and meet medical and fitness requirements. If you claim

*Pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) fitness test.

QUALIFICATIONS: To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One
year specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the
federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has
equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities
(KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is
typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of
qualifying specialized experience for this position include, but are not
limited to, the following: Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or
teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical
preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park,
recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist
work involving the development and implementation of policy related to
protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or
other similar work. Work will include independent research and presentation. OR
EDUCATION: Four year course of
study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours
of related course work. Qualifying education is natural resource management,
natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and
recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum
sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences,
sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and
protection of natural and cultural resources. One full year of full time
undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours. OR
COMBINATION SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying.
