VA Primary Care Providers (PCPs) manage a complex panel of patients, providing comprehensive medical care, emphasizing health promotion, disease prevention and chronic disease management. PCPs deliver care within Patient Aligned Care teams. PCPs work with a team of nursing staff and other members of an interdisciplinary health care team. Most practices have registered dieticians, clinical pharmacists, and mental health providers within the practice. PCPs provide general and gender-specific care to both men and women Veterans that range in age from 18 through the geriatric years. The physician serves as collaborating physician for nurse practitioner/physician assistants.
The VA utilizes a national electronic medical record and is known for delivering high quality, evidence based care within a culture of continuous improvement. The VA is in the midst of redesigning primary care towards a more patient centered, healthcare team approach with emphasis on improving health care outcomes through developing better systems for care management and coordination.
The VA Boston Healthcare System offers teaching opportunities for both medical students and medical residents in the inpatient and outpatient arenas. As a member of the VA Boston Healthcare System and Department of Medicine, a faculty appointment at an appropriate rank is expected. A Massachusetts physicians license is expected by the employment start date.

Physical Requirements: The physician must be able to perform gross and fine motor movements with sufficient coordination needed to complete physical examinations utilizing the techniques of inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation, and other diagnostic maneuvers. A physician must develop the psychomotor skills reasonable needed to perform or assist with procedures, treatments, administration of medication, management and operation of diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment utilized in the general and emergent care of patients required in practice. The physician must be able to maintain consciousness and equilibrium; have sufficient levels of postural control, neuromuscular control, and eye to hand coordination; and to possess the physical and mental stamina to meet the demands associated with extended periods of sitting, standing, moving and physical exertion required for satisfactory performance in the clinical settings.
a. Citizenship: Citizen of the United States
b. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
c. Residency: Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are:
(1) Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or
(2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
d. Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
e. Massachusetts license: To practice medicine or the ability to obtain one. (Because this position involves supervision of mid-level providers, a Massachusetts license is required.)
f. English Language Proficiency: Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Preferred experience:
Board Certified in Internal Medicine or Family Practice, VA Boston is seeking board certified physicians in order to meet ACGME requirements that trainers be supervised by board based physicians.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
