The Physician Assistant (PA) functions as a Primary Care Provider (PCP). VA PCPs manage a complex panel of patients, providing comprehensive medical care, emphasizing health promotion, disease prevention and chronic disease management. PCPs deliver care within Patient Aligned Care teams. PCPs work with a team of nursing staff and other members of an interdisciplinary health care team. Most practices have registered dieticians, clinical pharmacists, and mental health providers within the practice. PCPs provide general and gender-specific care to both men and women Veterans that range in age from 18 through the geriatric years.
The VA utilizes a national electronic medical record and is known for delivering high quality, evidence based care within a culture of continuous improvement. The VA is in the midst of redesigning primary care towards a more patient centered, healthcare team approach with emphasis on improving health care outcomes through developing better systems for care management and coordination.
The float physician assistant will travel to any VA Boston Primary Care location to cover other provider's panels, see new patients, and see same-day sick visits. This may occur at any of the 3 main campuses (Brockton, Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury) or at one of the 5 Community Based Outpatient Clinics (Causeway Street in Boston, Framingham, Lowell, Plymouth, or Quincy.)
The incumbent is accountable for adhering to the established policies, standards of care and practice and achieving the goals for the Clinical Practice Guidelines and Prevention Indicators. The PA works in collaboration with other members of the health care team to improve the quality of care delivered to veterans. He/she utilizes advanced skills in assessment, problem identification and clarification, treatment, planning and implementation of the patient's treatment plan. The PA will have prescription authority with a scope of practice. He or she provides care for Veterans ranging in age from 18 through the geriatric years, taking into consideration diagnosis, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural issues. The incumbent must be able to function with a high degree of autonomy and collaborate with other members of the interdisciplinary team to facilitate efficient and successful medical management of patients. The incumbent will provide leadership in the application of knowledge and clinical skills in organizing, processing and improving clinical outcomes to patients. The incumbent will serve as an expert to identify, analyze and resolve patient care problems and enhance team effectiveness.

is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the

(B) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another
health sciences related field from an accredited college or university
recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
(3) Certification
(A) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on
Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in
VHA.
(4) English Language Proficiency. PAs appointed to direct patient-care
positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience:
Experience in a Primary Care setting.
* Minimum of three (3) years of increasingly complex
clinical experience, demonstrating a high degree of competence.
* Ability to work in a collegial and collaborative relationship while directing
an interdisciplinary healthcare team; demonstrating strong
organizational skills with the ability to communicate effectively both
orally and in writing with professional and administrative staff.
* Demonstrated administrative knowledge and skill which includes ability to plan
and develop primary care.
