VA North Texas Health Care System currently seeking a Staff Development Specialist Supervisor for the Nursing Education Department. The Supervisor reports directly to the Chief for Nursing Education:
Qualifications:
- BSN with a Master's and/or Doctorate degree in Nursing preferred.
- Must be an American Heart Association certified BLS, instructor status preferred. ACLS required.
- One to three years of experience with direct patient and/or staff education, including a minimum of 2 years in Nursing Education preferred.
- A minimum of three to five years of recent clinical experience in the specialty area is required, including a minimum of 2 years in Nursing Management/Administration preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrated experience managing personnel in a complex organization with several layers of leadership in the organizational structure
- Designated first-line supervisory authority, responsibility, and accountability for the operations of the Nursing Education Department, ensuring that subordinate personnel provide timely service which complies with generally accepted standard operating procedures
- Responsible for the coordination, supervision and leadership of daily operations, nursing practice, quality of care, performance improvement, patient-safety, efficiency of services, environment of care, education and professional development
- Responsible for performance improvement, customer service/patient satisfaction, patient and employee safety, interviewing applicants, employee relations, standards of care and practice, the work environment, logistics, and accreditation and regulatory standards
- Responsible for time, attendance and payroll certification
- Responsible for coaching staff, addressing employee conduct and performance
- Complete recurring reports and performance evaluations timely
- Participate on service and medical center committees, leadership development training and task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care

- This position would serve as the SDS for some of the clinics, and possibly CBOC's, infrequent travel may be required.
- Responsible for determining staff education specific needs based on needs assessment.
- Possess ability to work as a team member and contribute to the work groups, both patient education and staff development specialists.
- Responsible for creating, developing, implementing and evaluating new patient education to include, but not limited to orientation, providing education as needed, based on the organizational needs.
- Responsible for facilitating and coordinating education working with all levels of staff and/or vendors as the situation requires.
- Work in a collaborative fashion with key stakeholders to include Nurse Managers, Assistant Nurse Managers, staff and other SDS's.
- Develops curricula, instructional materials, tests and evaluation tools. Makes changes to the curricula based on feedback and current clinical and/or educational evidence.
- Promotes evidence-based educational methods and technologies that support development of nursing expertise.
- Assures that staff meets required competencies, both annual and unit based for area of practice.
- Keeps current on best practice standards of nursing practice and education. Identifies policies, standards and practices not in compliance with current standards and communicates needed revisions through the nursing leadership and governance structures.
- Possesses strong inter-personal and communication skills in written and spoken English.
- Ability to work in a self-directed manner, collaborating and coordinating with health care professionals.
Work Schedule: Days (7:30 am to 4:00 pm), with rotation as necessary for training
Duty Location: Primary Campus Dallas with frequent travel to sister campuses for training
