Practicing within the guidelines of the policies, procedures and standards of care relevant to the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System; providing clinic and OR first assist support to the Surgery Service specialties including, general surgery, plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, transplant surgery, urology, and same day pre-operative unit. First assisting in the OR and providing all aspects of surgical care in the clinic, including diagnosis and management of common conditions, effectively communicating with health care providers and families, completing patient assessments, histories, physicals, scheduling surgery, and other patient management duties in a timely and accurate manner; triaging orthopedic consultations and giving scheduling guidance to assigned medical support assistants; completing insurance and work statements as required; assisting with orienting and educating residents, medical students, and physician assistant trainees; assist Surgery Service leadership with utilization review. Same day pre-operative duties; updating history and physical exams, completing code status, consenting for procedures and marking patients for OR.
Work Schedule: Variable (with occasional evening and weekends); occasional weekend clinic coverage may be required; occasional weekend/evening call and rounding responsibilities may be required.
Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting (15-44 lbs); light carrying (15 lbs or less); use of fingers, both hands required; walking (1-2 hrs/day); standing (2-5 hrs/day); both legs required; near vision correctable to 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; both eyes required; hearing (aid permitted); mental and emotional stability.
Basic Requirements:
Preferred Experience:
1-3 years experience as a Physician assistant in various specialized areas.
Experience as an OR first assistant.
Grade Requirements:
Full Grade. None beyond meeting the basic requirements (stated above)
Intermediate Grade. 1 year of professional practice as a PA; or successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the US Armed Forces; or a Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Senior Grade. 3 years of professional practice as a PA; or 2 years of professional practice as a PA and successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the US Armed Forces; or 2 years of professional practice as a PA and Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the US Department of Education; or a Doctoral degree in a health related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the US Department of Education.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
