Two positions:
One part-time position working 24 hours per two-week pay period;

The incumbent operates independently and without direct supervision as the technologist responsible for the performance and coordination of all Mammography procedures and Bone Density examinations at the Newburg CBOC. The incumbent performs CT or diagnostic radiology examinations when not assigned to the Newburg CBOC. Some of these exams are performed with and without the use of contrast materials such as CT's, IVP, Cholangiograms, etc. The purpose of these exams is to acquire diagnostic studies so that proper diagnosis and treatment may be achieved.
Functions:
The Mammography specialty involves the specific knowledge and abilities to perform complex imaging of the breast. The Mammography Technologist must be able to employ specialized mammographic image techniques such as magnification views and implant views of the breast. The Mammographer is required to be completely familiar with, and adhere to, all U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines regulating the practice of mammography, radiation safety, and quality assurance requirements. Mammographers are subject to the Mammography Quality Standards Act of 1992 (MQSA) and regulated by the FDA. Demonstrates proper operation of mammography equipment. Ensures that mammography equipment is functioning properly and quality assurance is completed on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual basis according to established policies and procedures. The incumbent is capable of analyzing the results and initiating corrective action when necessary. Notifies appropriate biomedical staff to report equipment malfunctions in a timely manner by entering work orders into VISTA. Schedules mammographic procedures in a timely fashion. The Mammographer manages workload in an effective manner by obtaining requests and verifying patient history to ensure the proper mammography procedure has been requested and is performed. Incumbent identifies clinical indicators for screening vs. diagnostic mammography. The mammographer checks for prior images for review prior to procedure, or if mammograms have been performed at an outside facility, obtains a signed release of information from the Veteran to request images from outside facilities for comparison. Prior to an exam, the mammographer will review the patient information sheet and question the patient as to any changes that have been notified since the last exam. The mammographer offers educational materials and instruction on breast self-exam. The mammographer properly identifies patients using two separate appropriate personal identifiers. The mammographer ensures proper marking of all mammograms with the name of the patient and a medical record number, date of exam, view, facility name and location, and technologist's identification. The mammographer performs a wide variety of technically demanding radiographic projections from basic "screening mammograms" to more challenging "diagnostic" mammograms and special procedures and demonstrates proficiency in imaging augmented/surgically altered breast to optimally visualize the tissue of the breast . The mammographer determines technical factors, sets controls and operates digital mammography equipment to achieve quality diagnostic images and is accountable to the interpreting radiologist for the quality of mammographic images.

GRADE REQUIREMENTS
Creditable Experience
Knowledge of Current Radiologic Technology Practice. To be creditable, experience must have demonstrated possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (also referred to as clinical competencies) associated with current radiologic technology practice. This may have been evidenced by the equivalent of 1 year of active practice, which is paid or non-paid employment as a DRT as defined by ARRT.
Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it was earned after completion of the basic certification requirements identified in paragraph 2b above. Experience as a graduate DRT is creditable provided the candidate functioned as a DRT and subsequently passed the certification examination.
Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a DRT is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a DRT would receive 1 week of full-time credit for each 2 weeks of half-time work.
Grade Determinations. In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.
GS-9
Experience. Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-8) directly related to the position to be filled, i.e., experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities as follows: 1) Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines; 2) Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed; 3) Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results; 4) Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed; 5) Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers; and 6) Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

1. Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures;
2. Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers;

4. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography;
5. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions; and
6. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
