Physical Demands: Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Duties include demands for strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time.
Work Environment: The work is primarily performed in forest and range environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, and in smoky conditions. Your primary duties as Engine Captain are to perform wildland firefighting work and to supervise a wildland fire engine crew. Your specific duties will involve:
* ensuring the correct positioning, proper use and operation of the fire engine;
* performing and directing others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose and using nozzles appropriately;
* assisting in the preparation of hazardous fuels treatment plans and burn plans based on predicted fire behavior and risk assessment;
* ensuring the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch; and,
* providing for crew safety and welfare and implementing a training program in compliance with applicable requirements.

FACT SHEET FOR FIRE POSITIONS: FIREFIGHTERS CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The position is subject to maximum entry age (MEA) requirements.
The maximum entry-age for this position shall not exceed age 37; unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday.
