The incumbent serves as an Outpatient Pharmacy Technician with responsibility of performing duties at various clinics within VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System and may rotate on a regular basis or as required. Incumbent may work weekends and holidays as priorities demonstrate a need. Employees at this grade level serve as Pharmacy Technicians under the supervision of registered pharmacists. Responsible for all activities and functions generated by his/her assigned section on a day-to-day basis. Technicians at this grade level function independently receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures and require minimal supervision. This position functions primarily in the Outpatient Pharmacy area to support the provision of timely and quality pharmaceutical care. Duties listed below are not all inclusive:

Physical Requirements: This position requires prolonged standing and walking with a moderate amount of stooping, reaching or lifting, and pushing or pulling. A technician may be required to lift, push/pull up to 45 pounds. A dispensing system may be used for varying lengths of time. Pharmacy technicians may be required to work irregular tours, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizen of the United States.
Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least three (3) months of experience.
Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
Definitions
(1) Creditable Experience. To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of pharmacy technician practice.
(2) Quality of Experience. To be creditable, pharmacy technician experience must be documented on the application and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means.
(3) Part-time Experience. Part-time experience as a pharmacy technician is credited according to its relationship to the full-time work week. For example, a pharmacy technician would receive 1 week of full-time credit for each 2 weeks of half-time work.

Specialized Experience: Applicant must demonstrate experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience for the GS-06 must have been equivalent to at least one year at the next lower grade (GS-05). Examples of specialized experience are: stocking, maintaining, preparation, and distribution of medications after verification by a pharmacist. Experience in the stocking and maintainance of all Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) including Pyxis, Boxpicker, EXP, ScriptPro, etc., in all areas of the Pharmacy. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the KSAs identified below for the assignment, within their resume.
1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription processes demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
