The Mental Health Nurse Practitioner must be a skilled registered nurse with clinical training and experience and is responsible in demonstrating creative approaches to management of complex patient care. The incumbent provides leadership in the application of nursing process to Veteran patients, organizational process and/or systems, improving outcomes at the program or service level. As a Title 38 nurse, position incumbent is accountable to the Chief of Mental Health Service.
The patient population includes Veterans who are likely to present with Severe Mental Illness (SMI), PTSD, mood disorders, substance abuse disorders, anxiety disorders and concomitant medical co-morbidities. The NP is knowledgeable in assessment, treatment and evaluation of a comprehensive range of health care problems including but not limited to: preventive health, prescribing medications and other treatments; ordering, conducting and interpreting laboratory, diagnostic studies and procedures; and patient and family education utilizing community, social and health resources enhancing recovery principles. The Nurse Practitioner may be assigned a panel of patients to manage their health care, assigned urgent or acute care duties or assist with other specialized Mental Health Programs like Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center (PRRC) as an example.
