This position(s) is a full-time TEMPORARY appointment, not-to-exceed 1039 hours of work in a service year. The appointment is expected to provide full-time, 40 hours per week employment May 2017 through September 2017. Anticipated schedule is 9am - 5pm; holiday and weekend work is required. Positions will be duty stationed at Berlin, Maryland or Chincoteague, Virginia. Appointments may be terminated at any time, may be extended, or work schedules may be changed to part-time depending on funding and work availability.
Number of Vacancies: We expect to fill up to 2 vacancies - one at either duty station, however the announcement may be used to fill additional similar vacancies.

Serves as the Assistant Head Lifeguard at one of the two protected beach units, taking responsibility of the operation of the protected beach, the safety of the visitors and leading up to seven lifeguards in the absence of the head lifeguard. The assistant head lifeguard performs lifeguard services during assigned tours of duty, including search and rescue, lifesaving, preventive lifeguarding and providing appropriate care to injured and ill visitors The Assistant Head Lifeguard is required to complete daily in-service physical training consisting of soft sand running and ocean swimming. The Assistant Head Lifeguard prepares rescue reports, maintains records and follows procedures consistent with park policies.
Working Conditions: Work is performed outdoors in direct sun, carrying heavy loads, working in an ocean beach environment. The terrain can be uneven and consists of soft or hard packed sand mixed with shells and other debris. Incumbent will be subject to weather variances such as extreme heat or cold, rainy conditions and high UV and heat indexes. The incumbent will be subject to cold water temperatures, large waves and marine organisms when training or making water rescues. The work can be hazardous when dealing with blood or other body fluids when making rescues. Personal protective gear is required.
Position Location: Assateague Island National Seashore is located on the eastern coast of Maryland and Virginia, approximately 130 miles east of Washington, DC. The area is largely rural, with numerous small towns and the seaside resorts of Ocean City, MD and Chincoteague, VA nearby. Complete shopping and medical services are available as are public and private schools. The small city of Salisbury, MD is about 30 miles west of the headquarters area and has shopping centers, a university and a large hospital. Summers are hot and humid, with high temperatures commonly in the 90s. Winters are mild with little snow and daytime temperatures usually above freezing. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
** Applicants must be 16 years of age by the effective date of the appointment.
**Wearing the National Park Service Lifeguard uniform is required.
**This position requires you to possess a valid state drivers license to operate a government and/or privately owned vehicle as part of your official duties.
**Drug Testing Designated position requiring random and pre-employment testing.
**Upon selection, the candidate must be able to pass the Assateague "Surf School" program. The candidate must be able to pass the ARC First Responder Cognitive Exam with a score of 80 percent or better along with a pass or fail on the practical exam. Candidate must pass surf lifeguard skills training practical and cognitive exam. Incumbent must be able to successfully complete a timed ocean swim of 500 yards in less than 10 minutes, and complete a timed 1.5 mile run in less than 12 minutes.
**Required daily in-service training regimen includes a 2000-yard run (1.14 miles), followed by a 500-yard ocean swim, followed by a run/swim/run combination of 100 yards each.
**Government housing is available.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: To be eligible for the GS-05 position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in federal service performing lifeguarding duties in an ocean, pool, lake or river area, serving as a swim instructor/coach, etc. OR Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. (Copy of transcripts must be included with application package if qualifying based on education)
Selective Factor (Screen Out):
Selectee must possess a current valid CPR and Emergency Medical Responder Certifications or higher EMS Certification.
Selectee must possess 3 months of ocean lifeguarding experience.
You must include dates of employment (month and year) and hours worked per week to receive credit for your work experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. You will not receive credit for experience that does not indicate the exact hours worked per week or is listed as "varies". Part-time hours are prorated.
VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
