PATHWAYS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program which is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides the student with work experience directly related to their academic studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion.
CONVERSION: This appointment is anticipated to continue until the student's education program requirements have been completed, at which time the individual may, at the agency's discretion, be converted to a term appointment. There is no guarantee for conversion.

This position may involve: specific administrative task/work assignments and a variety of activities and assignments, and working with technical, administrative and professional staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience. This position provides guide services to visitors. The work involves giving talks, interpreting historic features, answering questions, guiding tours, and providing miscellaneous services to visitors. Presents limited and repetitive pre-established talks including introductions to films, map talks, and static exhibit interpretation. Staffs information counter at the visitor center serving as initial contact for visitors. Provides information on a variety of subjects and interprets park values for visitors with varying interests and backgrounds.
Area Information:
Topeka is the capitol city of Kansas, and a place rich in the history of America's struggle towards guaranteeing freedom and equality for all people. The park is located in a neighborhood originally called "Ritchie's Addition", named for abolitionist John Ritchie, who with his wife Mary, settled in Kansas Territory as part of the effort to carry it to statehood without slavery under the "Kansas-Nebraska Act" of 1854. The Visitor Center and administrative offices are housed in the former Monroe Elementary School, one of four schools designated for African American children in the segregation era prior to the Brown decision. The park is located less than one mile from the Historic Ritchie House, less than two miles from Downtown Topeka, and less than three miles from the campus of Washburn University. Two paved multi-use recreational trails intersect near the park the Shunga Trail and the Landon Trail. Hiking, fishing, and boating are available in nearby city and state parks. No park housing is available for these positions, but many apartment buildings in town offer month-to-month leases at affordable rates.
Physical Demands:
The work requires standing for long periods of time, walking for long distances, climbing and descending steep inclines, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items. Mental Stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of interpretive programs.
Work Environment:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors resulting in exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
