The Office of Justice Services, within the Bureau of Indian Affairs, is searching for an individual to serve as a Police Officer for the Division of Law Enforcement Services, District V, Northern Cheyenne Agency located in Lame Deer, MT. The mission of the Office of Justice Services is to uphold the constitutional sovereignty and customs of Tribes while protecting the rights of the people; protect life and property; ensure employment suitability; and promote and preserve peace within Indian country. This includes major Federal crimes and state crimes under Federal statute and Tribal laws.
Salary Information: GL-04: $35,224; GL-05: $40,511; GL-06: $42,715; GL-07: $46,110; GL-08: $48,059. First time hires to the Federal government start at the starting salary of the grade level.
The full performance level of this position is GL-08. The major duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: The duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of finger, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs, and feet must be sufficiently intact and functioning in order that applicants may perform the duties satisfactorily. Sufficiently good vision in each eye, with or without correction, is required to perform duties satisfactorily. Near vision, corrective lenses permitted, must be sufficient to read printed material the size of typewritten characters. Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz levels. Since the duties of these positions are exacting and responsible, and involve activities under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability. Any physical condition that would cause the applicant to be a hazard to himself/herself, or others is disqualifying.
SUITABILITY, CLEARANCE & REQUIREMENTS: A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. DRIVING RECORD REQUIREMENT: Incumbent is required to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle in the performance of duties; therefore, a valid driver's license is required. Incumbent must have a safe driving record within the three-year period immediately preceding submittal of GSA Form 3607 and be able to meet the safe driving requirements of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
DRUG TESTING: This is a testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of Interior Drug-Free Workplace Program.
PRIMARY LAW ENFORCEMENT RETIREMENT COVERAGE: This position has been approved for primary Law Enforcement coverage.
SELECTIVE SERVICE: If you are a male applicant who was born after 12/31/1959 and are required to register under the Military Selective Service Act, the Defense Authorization Act of 1986 requires that you be registered or you are not eligible for appointment in this agency.
GL-04: To qualify based on experience, you must have the following:
Six months of general work experience in any administrative, clerical, technical, or military work that involved protecting property, equipment data, or materials; or that involved making judgments based on the application of directions, rules, regulations, or laws.
AND
Six months of specific experience providing routine fixed post or patrol assignments as a public safety official. This must include at least THREE of the following: 1) responding to calls or alarms to crimes; 2) questioning individuals at the scene of an incident; 3) informing individuals of their rights as suspects or witnesses; 4) operating radar or speed detection equipment; 5) arresting violators caught in the act; 6) issuing citations for observed violations of law; 7) handing out crime prevention information during patrols; 8) preparing accident reports; or 9) assisting victims of accidents.

To qualify based on education, you must have the following:
Two years of successfully completed study at an accredited school above the high school level with at least 12 semester hours in police administration, police law and evidence, police investigation, criminology, law enforcement, general law, or similar subjects closely related to police work. Transcripts must be submitted by the closing date.
NOTE: Successful completion of a Federal, State, county, or municipal police academy or comparable training course that included at least 40 classroom hours of instruction in police department procedures and methods, and local law and regulations, may be substituted for a maximum of 3 months of specialized experience or 6 months of general experience.

A Combination of experience and education that totals 100% of the requirement above.
GL-05: To qualify based on experience, you must have the following:
You must have one year of prior public safety work experience at the GL-04 grade level or equivalency performing a full range of operations in preventing or resolving offenses. This must have included at least FOUR of the following: 1) pursuing and apprehending persons fleeing a crime scene or resisting arrest; 2) subduing individuals causing disturbances; 3) identifying and arresting violators based on eyewitness accounts; 4) coordinating emergency responses between security, fire, and other emergency units; 5) taking charge of a crime scene and restricting access to the scene or 6) seeking, detecting, and protecting evidence and witnesses at the scene of an incident.
OR
To qualify based on education, you must have the following:
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study at an accredited school leading to a bachelor's degree in Police Science or a comparable degree program related to the work of the position. Transcripts must be submitted by the closing date.
NOTE: Successful completion of a Federal, State, county, or municipal police academy or comparable training course that included at least 40 classroom hours of instruction in police department procedures and methods, and local law and regulations, may be substituted for a maximum of 3 months of specialized experience or 6 months of general experience.

GL-06:
In addition to experience at lower grade levels, to qualify at the GL-06 level, you must have one year of police work experience at the GL-05 grade level or equivalency performing ALL work experience listed above for the GL-05 grade level, as well as performing the following: 1) independently applying investigative procedures to detect and resolve crimes requiring extensive research, including interviewing, planning, observing, conducting stakeout operations, and 2) executing investigations which result in the arrests of suspects.
GL-07:
In addition to the experience at the lower grade levels, to qualify at the GL-07 level, you must have one year experience at the GL-06 grade level or equivalency performing the following: 1) independently applying investigative procedures to detect and resolve crimes requiring extensive research, including interviewing witnesses; planning, observing, conducting stakeout operations; executing investigations which result in the arrests of suspects; and 2) independently conducting long-term investigations (several weeks) to detect and apprehend criminal violations of such felonies as theft, assault, homicide, illegal entry, violations of controlled substances, etc. Examples of experience at this level may include developing long-term undercover conditions to detect and prevent criminal activity, developing informant networks for specific assignments, and developing long-term case information and facts for use in pressing charges and bringing suspects to trial.
GL-08:
In addition to the experience at lower grade levels, to qualify at the GL-08 level, you must have one year experience at the GL-07 grade level or equivalency performing the following: 1) independently conducting long-term investigations which require coordination with external federal, state, or local agencies; and 2) experience providing police protection during highly volatile emergency situations. Examples may include identifying courses of action during hostage situations, kidnappings, terrorist attacks, armed robbery, or other life-threatening situations.
