The Radiation Oncology Department is part of a large tertiary care medical center receiving consults and referrals internally as well as from the South East region. The Therapeutic Medical Physicist (TMP) is a member of a current Radiation Oncology team comprising of four Therapeutic Radiologic Technologists (TRTs), a Radiation Oncologist, one Registered Nurse, Advanced Practice provider, and one Administrative Officer with positions subject to change. The department currently functions through a single Varian(R) 21 EX linear accelerator with a Millennium MLC (120 leaf) Collimator, along Dynamic Wedge, IMRT and EPID (portal imager), and is adding the second TrueBeam Varian linear accelerator in its second vault. ARIA(R) is used for record and verify and Eclipse (R) for treatment planning. All simulations are performed on a Philips (R) Brilliance Big Bore 16-slice CT Simulator with Tumor LOC(R) capabilities. As a member of a team of professionals responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients, the incumbent is responsible for (a) techniques used to standardize and calibrate radiation therapy equipment, (b) the accuracy and safety of physical methods used in close cooperation with Physicians and other personnel, and (c) routine clinical applications of equipment. Furthermore, he/she is responsible for quality assurance of equipment used in treatments and for providing education and training in medical physics impacting all Veterans treated for cancer with radiation therapy within a large geographic region with national referrals. The incumbent will be responsible for all other duties as assigned and will be willing to grow as our Radiation Oncology Service expands.

A ONE YEAR SUPERVISORY PROBATIONARY PERIOD IS REQUIRED OF ALL NEWLY APPOINTED SUPERVISORS.
Physical Requirements: The work includes periods of standing, walking or sitting at a computer console. Carrying of moderately heavy articles, such as alloy blocks or water phantoms, with some bending and lifting is also required. Manual dexterity is required for the fabrication of treatment devices and radioactive source handling.

Advanced Level: Employees at this level who are not supervisors must be able to carry out assigned tasks independently in all areas of radiation therapy requiring TMP competencies which substantially exceed the full performance level and require advanced knowledge in all areas of radiation therapy.

KSA 4 - Advanced expertise in acceptance testing, clinical commissioning and (when applicable) calibration procedures for a variety of ancillary radiation oncology delivery, imaging, dosimetry, metrology, and computational systems.
