About the Position: This is a position with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, aboard the Dredge Goetz. The Dredge Goetz is a 20" hydraulic Class I pipeline dredge that performs a critical role in maintaining the nine foot navigation channel on the Mississippi River. The Dredge Goetz home port is Fountain City, WI but the duty station of the position is the Dredge Goetz, wherever it is located. The typical dredging season last 6 months, followed by demobilization and off season maintenance activities.

Serves as a 3rd Assistant Engineer on a Class I pipeline dredge (18" discharge and over). The dredge Goetz a diesel-electric, powered cutterhead or dustpan dredge operating on the Western Rivers of the US. In training for and in line for promotion to the position of 2nd Assistant PLD Class 1. Stands a Shift Watch and supervises the work of the crew on the shift composed of employees in any several trade occupations including striker, marine oiler, fireman watertender, electrician, electronic mechanic, machinist and welder. Exercises responsibility for the operation, maintenance, and repair of all engine room and associated machinery, refrigerating, plumbing, heating and electric/electronic systems and attendant plant. Must hold a US Coast Guard 3rd Asst. Engineer's license and or a Designated Duty Engineer License commensurate with the type of engine room machinery and equipment, horsepower, and characteristics of the vessel to which assigned.

To meet the screen out element applicants should document experience in the following: Exercise shift watch responsibilities for handling controls, operations and maintenance, and participating in the routine repairs of all engine room machinery and equipment including the main propelling engines, pumping engines, auxiliary pumps, machinery on the vessel and attendant plant and electric/electronic systems. Maintains continuous operating efficiency to prevent damage to machinery. Makes regular and period inspections by visual and auditory means of all machinery to determine the operating conditions and the need for maintenance and repairs. Make minor adjustments and routine repairs on initiate and reports major defects to the Chief Engineer. Assists in making non-routine operating repairs and major repairs and overhauls during lay-ups. Assist in painting equipment and keeping the engine room clean.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Incumbent performs work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms and where the parts, equipment or systems are in hard-to-reach places. Work requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel climb and work is a tiring and uncomfortable position. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside subjecting employee to various climatic conditions, abnormal noises, temperature, danger of burns, irritation from grease and oils, bruises, strains, dangers involved in attending moving machinery, possible drowning from falling overboard, electrical shock, falls on slippery decks or steep stairways, and crankcase explosion.
