PHYSICAL EFFORT
Light to moderate physical exertion is required in lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds. Mechanics are required to stoop, bend, and stand for extended periods of time on concrete floors. On occasion, they must climb 20 feet to the roof of the Barrier buildings to perform servicing on roof mounted equipment. Must have valid state driver's license and be able to safely drive government 4-wheel drive vehicle.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Inside work is done in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated area and work outside is normally done in good weather. However in emergency situations, work is performed under poor weather conditions. Some of the equipment needed to be checked is outside in stand alone partially protected structures exposed to adverse weather, rain and snow, coal dust, dirt roadway dust from semi-trailer traffic, loud noises from passing trains & emergency generators. The work environment involves considerable risk to potentially dangerous situations, including exposure to high voltage and working near the canal wall with the risk of drowning. There is potential for electric shock from many sources on the facility and any fall from the canal wall into the canal waters with the electric barriers operating could result in permanent disability or death. There are locations on the Dispersal Barrier Facility where Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) readings exceed permissible limits for personnel. Personnel are prohibited from accessing these areas at certain times of high power usage. Uses personal protective equipment, such as aural protectors, safety glasses, hard hats, steel toe shoes, and safety harnesses & lanyards for compliance with fall protection requirements. Mechanics must wear suitable arch flash personal protective equipment when accessing certain electric/electronic equipment for troubleshooting or repairs. Incumbent may be placed on call during special operations, planned maintenance periods for the Dispersal Barriers, or periods of adverse weather when likelihood of primary power outages and power surges is increased that could cause equipment damage or loss of power into the water. Incumbent may need to respond via cellular phone or in person at the facility during after normal working hour emergencies to investigate and assess the performance of equipment and/or contracted personnel on watch at the facility.
