ABOUT THE POSITION: This position is with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, Recreation and Natural Resource Project Office, Northern Headwaters Project Office, Grand Rapids, MN. A typical staff consists of a park manager, natural resource specialists, maintenance workers and student trainees.
ABOUT THE PATHWAYS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM: The purpose of the Pathways Internship Program is to provide the intern with exposure to public service, enhance educational experience, and support educational goals. The program is structured to give interns the opportunity to work in positions related to their academic/career goals. A written agreement is required between the agency and the intern. The participant completes assigned duties, tasks, and developmental activities specified in the agreement. The employing agency may non-competitively convert an intern to a career/career-conditional or term appointment (with potential for further non-competitive promotion up to the GS-07 level) within 120 days after the student completes the educational requirements. The conversion is not guaranteed and is based on the needs of the agency.

As a Park Ranger (Pathways Intern) you will accomplish a variety of tasks related to the management and operation of a recreation area. The student trainee performs a variety of assignments in carrying out the overall district policies and procedures concerning the conservation and use of water resource development projects. Duties are performed as part of a formal student program, which requires on-the-job training in natural resource management at one or more water resource development projects within the District. Performs day-to-day activities and assists higher grade employees in planning day-to-day execution of activities associated with or related to one or more of the following programs: recreation and park administration, lakeshore management, public education and interpretation, natural resource management, historic properties protection, visitor assistance, or public safety. The trainee would receive training in First Aid/CPR, Visitor Assistance Self Defense/Pepper Spray, Defensive Driving, Information Awareness and Security training along with a number of additional Department of Army mandated courses.

Education requirement: This position has a positive education requirement for the Park Ranger (Pathways Internship): Copies of your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Education requirement - 2 academic years of post-high school study with 12 semester hours of related course work. Major study -- natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.
