This position is located in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service, Department of Veterans Affairs, Eastern Colorado Health Care System. The incumbent provides authoritative consultative services to management at all levels of the organization as it applies to inventory management and contracting for supplies and services in a clinical laboratory setting. The incumbent must possess a sound, general knowledge of medical technology practice, procedures and accreditation requirements.
Note: The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the GS-9. The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate's education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

This position is located in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service, VA ECHCS. The incumbent performs a wide variety of laboratory tests on blood, urine and other body fluids. This is considered the full performance level for nonsupervisory positions.
An MT/CLS at this level develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results. Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques, and require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. The work performed is in a variety of laboratory disciplines, such as bacteriology, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, immunology, immunohematology (blood banking) and urinalysis. Such positions include requirements to monitor quality control systems and measures; collaborate in the diagnosis and treatment of patients; and provide education for laboratory and other healthcare professionals, and others in the medical center setting including the public.
The duties and responsibilities of the Medical Technologist include but are not limited to the following:
(1). Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in applying a wide range of concepts principles and methodology of the Medical Technology to perform advance techniques and independent work.
(2). Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance procedures and principles of performance improvement in order to manage reagents and supply inventories and document control systems.
(3). Ability and knowledge to modify or adapt established methods, procedures, or techniques to resolve difficult or complex problems.
(4). Independently processes, performs, and reports results for all procedures in Hematology, Blood Bank, Coagulation, Chemistry, and Urinalysis with limited duties in Flow Cytometry such as, but not all inclusive, specimen processing.
(5). Knowledge of compliance requirements for laboratory functions.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00 am-3:30 pm, rotating weekends and holidays
Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be able to perform moderate lifting up to 20lbs, straight pulling, pushing, reaching above the shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walking, standing for up to 4 hours, kneeling, repeated bending, use of both arms and legs. Specific visual requirements include use of both eyes, depth perception, ability to distinguish colors and shades of colors, hearing (aids permitted), clear, high cognitive function and emotional stability; ability to read ordinary type without strain.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. Citizenship. Citizenship of the United States (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.)
Education: A Master's degree or 2 academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education in medical technology or directly related field.
Experience: 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level in Federal Service.
Certification. All candidates must currently possess or be eligible for and pass within one year the appropriate certification examination as a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist given by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR), the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).
