At the full performance level of the target conversion position (GS-08), you will: be a working leader of a gage installation, gage repair, discharge, and/or water quality field party operating on the Mississippi River and its tributaries in the Memphis District. Assignments involve independent responsibility for planning and conducting work related to the collection, sampling, installation, repair, programming, and compilation of hydrologic and water quality data. Makes reconnaissance surveys for location of new river gages and determines most effective means to obtain data during floods or unusual conditions. Prepares plans for the supporting structures and determines type of equipment needed to provide suitable records for use in Water Resource investigations. Prepares correspondence as necessary for submission to various local or state agencies requesting installation or right of way approval. Builds the station utilizing construction methods that vary with site and require a high level of skill and knowledge in operating construction tools. Maintains existing stations.
This position is being filled at the GS-06, -07, and/or -08 level with potential conversion to a position with a full performance level at the GS-08.

Experience:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Specialized Experience:
To qualify at the GS-06 grade level: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level (GS-05). Specialized experience is defined as: (1) Conducting work related to assisting in the collection, sampling, repair, programming, and compilation of simple hydrologic and water quality data; (2) Assisting in the network distribution of simple forecasts and weather information; (3) Experience assisting with procedures used in preparing simple river stage predictions; and (4) Familiarity with use and function of Microsoft Office products is required.
All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.
To qualify at the GS-07 grade level: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level (GS-06). Specialized experience is defined as: (1) Conducting work related to assisting in the collection, sampling, repair, programming, and compilation of a variety of hydrologic and water quality data; (2) Assisting in the network distribution of forecasts and weather information; (3) Experience assisting with procedures used in preparing river stage predictions; and (4) Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office products is required.
To qualify at the GS-08 grade level: You must possess one year of specialized experience at the GS-07 level or equivalent pay band in the Federal Service doing the following duties: (1) Planning and conducting work related to the collection, sampling, installation, repair, programming, and compilation of hydrologic and water quality data; (2) Network distribution of forecasts and weather information; (3) Experience with procedures used in preparing river stage predictions; and (4) Moderate experience with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office products is required.
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:
- Ability to perform Hydrographic Instrumentation
- Ability to obtain Hydrographic Data
- Knowledge of Hydrographic Equipment Maintenance
