This position is located at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. The
incumbent serves as a Registered Nurse
(Psychiatric/Mental Health)in the Outpatient Mental Health(MH) Clinic/ MH Integrated Care Clinics will
provide comprehensive coordination of care to Veterans see utilizing
specialized nursing skills and knowledge in a relatively independent fashion in
providing collaborative and consultative care,
patient and family education, outreach, follow-up, intake, program
coordination and evaluation, and other activities appropriate to care
coordination for their patient population.
RNs in Outpatient Mental Health Nursing provide comprehensive mental
health assessment and treatment to veterans who have psychiatric, behavioral
and/or substance use disorders. The RN assessment includes immediate safety
issues, referral to appropriate programs and veteran response to previously
provided care. Assessment includes suicide risk, along with development of
suicide safety plans. Outpatient Mental Health RNs are instrumental in care
planning, care delivery and discharge planning and ensuring the 7 day post
hospital follow up visit. Outpatient Mental Health RNs recognize the signs of
potential or active disruptive behavior and apply a high level of skill in containing
this behavior. Outpatient Mental Health RNs apply their knowledge of medical
illness and its potential impact on mental status when conducting their
assessments. Treatment modalities include individual sessions, medication
administration and psycho-educational group sessions with patients.
RN Care Managers in Primary Care-Mental Health Integration (PCMHI) program
are Mental Health Care Managers in an emerging role that is a co-located,
collaborative care manager which works at the interface between primary care
and mental health care in a blended, integrated care model. The PCMHI Care
Manager functions as a case manager, consultant, therapist and educator while
providing integrated Mental Health care to outpatients in Primary Care.
Care management assures adequate identification and treatment of many mental
illnesses. The Care Manager provides education and brief interventions to
patients, assures longitudinal follow-up, and assesses response to and
side-effects from treatment. The assessment and collaborative care provided by
this professional nurse is performed primarily to improve the recognition,
treatment and management of psychosocial/behavioral problems and deliver brief,
consultative based services.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
We are a 24/7 medical center with various tours of duty and incumbent may be required to work off tours, nights, holidays and/or weekends to meet the mission of caring for the Veterans

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
(1) Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR
(2) The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. OR
(3) In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
