THIS IS A NON-BARGAINING UNIT, EXCEPTED SERVICE, TITLE 38 POSITION.
The Chief Nurse, Sterile Processing Service (SPS)/Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) is a Registered Nurse that will assume responsibility for oversight of all SPS/RME activities and functions across the medical center and associated off- site community locations. She/he oversees and facilitates the flow of services between equipment requestors, purchasing, bio-medical engineering, end users and Sterile Processing Services relative to RME and SPS activities and requirements. This Chief Nurse ensures processes are in place so that staff meet or exceed all applicable standards related to SPS/RME regulations and directives, including those from VA and Non-VA regulatory bodies. She/he is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, staffing, directing, controlling, and evaluating all SPS/RME activities for this medical center, Community Based Outpatient Centers and associated sites for care.
The incumbent ensures the practice of SPS is consistent with VA Standards, such as VA Handbooks, Directives and external standards, such as Joint Commission of Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, AORN, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). The incumbent is a dynamic and experienced nurse leader who reports directly to the Associate Director-Patient Care Services.
This position provides leadership by developing, implementing, and facilitating wide processes including but not limited to:
-Effectively identify, classify and assess all RME as it is requested or brought into the facility
-Ensure manufacturer's instructions for cleaning or processing can be adhered to
-Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that mirror IFUs for each piece of RME prior to cleaning/processing or using the equipment
-Provide staff training for each piece of RME prior to cleaning/processing or using
-Complete direct observation competencies for each piece of RME prior to cleaning/processing or using the equipment
-Ensure all levels of staff understand their responsibilities relative to RME
-Effectively identify opportunities to improve
-Effectively take action to correct deficiencies
-Effectively continuously monitor RME/SPS processes
-Manage overall infection control program including complex surveillance, prevention, and control of nosocomial infections
-Understand cost-benefit relationship of various infection control programs and implement cost-saving strategies across SPS/RME

Mandated Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing required; MSN preferred
Surgical/Operating Room experience: 3-5 years
Basic Computer skills
Current BLS

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
