This position functions in Pharmacy Service within the Miami VA Healthcare Systems. The incumbent is a highly specialized technician, who will perform a variety of complex :technical skills and functions, which requires comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy practices. Most duties will be performed in the Outpatient Pharmacy, as required and assigned, the incumbent is expected to accomplish all duties related to stocking, delivering, inventory, inspections, assembling ward orders, prescription set ups, controlled substances distribution, IV and some hazardous drug compounding, and unit-dose. drug packaging and drug distribution. The incumbent performing at this level is considered a fully performing technician and will execute their duties with general supervision. Correctly interprets physician orders, selects and measures appropriate ingredients, mixes ingredients in a safe and effective manner, inspects the final product for accuracy, suitability and elegance, labels the product, maintains records of the manufacturing process and supplies the product for delivery. Inventories and replenishes emergency trays without a second review. Appropriately restocks controlled substances items in automated secured cabinets (i.e. Pyxis) throughout medical center. Uses standard protocols to determine an accurate expiration date for each batch prepared. Accurately fills prescription items for wards using Automatic Replenishment reports by selecting correct drug strength and dosage form. Edits and corrects prescription label information as necessary. Records expiration dates in the automatic prescription dispensing system upon receipt. The technician will be assigned additional duties by the supervisor as necessary for the smooth operation of the pharmacy.
Physical Requirements: Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (up to 3 hours); Standing (up to 3 hours); Repeated bending (up to 1 hour); Sitting for long periods of time; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Exposure to fumes, smokes, or gases; contact with solvents, greases, and oils.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: (Candidates must meet both the Basic and Grade Qualifications).
I. Basic Qualifications:
a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States.
b. Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
c . Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is highly desirable at the GS-2 GS-5 levels.
d. Loss of Credential.An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain licensure/certification/registration within the required time frame, or who fails to maintain the required licensure/certification/registration must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of employment.
e. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
II. Grade Qualifications:
1. GS-2: None Beyond the basic qualifications.
2. GS-3:
Education or Experience. Completion of 1 year of post-high school coursework related to medicine (e.g. chemistry, biology, college mathematics, etc.)
Or
Successful completion of a 1 year accredited pharmacy technician training program, or 6 months of general experience, that may have included experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, laboratory technology, etc.).
3. GS-4:
Education or Experience. Successful completion of 2 years above high school with courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology
Or
1 year of general experience that may have included experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, laboratory technology, etc.)
4. GS-5:
Education or Experience. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology
Or
Successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level
Or
At least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 Pharmacy Technician level (at least four (4) year of Pharmacy technician experience)in Federal Service.
Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled, such as duties related to stocking, delivering, inventory, inspections, assembling ward orders, prescription set ups, controlled substances distribution, IV and some hazardous drug compounding, and unit-dose, drug packaging and drug distribution.
