This position is for a highly trained and skilled pharmacy technician in the VA system at the MVAHS. The incumbent will perform a variety of complex technical skills and functions which requires comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy practices. The employee will assists the pharmacist, in providing optimal care and timely customer service in accordance with the mission, vision and. goals of the MVAHS and Pharmacy Service. The employee functioning at this level will perform with limited supervision. The incumbent assembles prescriptions properly with the correct drug, strength, quantity, auxiliary labels and prescription labels for window dispensing and mail delivery. Verifies the patient's identification following the Medical Center's policies. Receives, verifies, signs for and stores incoming supplies and medications from local vendors, warehouse and contract suppliers. Performs searches, updates patient information, and generates shipping reports as requested by the supervisor. Assists patients with refill request, problems with prescriptions and other queries. Provides equipment maintenance (i.e. cleaning, archiving data, etc.). Provides training and education to Residents, Students, and other staff members.
Physical Requirements: Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (up to 3 hours); Standing (up to 3 hours); Repeated bending (up to 1 hour); Sitting for long periods of time; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; exposure to fumes, smokes, or gases; contact with solvents, greases, and oils.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: (Candidates must meet both the Basic and Grade Qualifications).
I. Basic Qualifications:
a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States.
b. Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
c .Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
Loss of Credential. An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain licensure/certification/registration within the required time frame, or who fails to maintain the required licensure/certification/registration must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of employment.
d. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
II. Grade Qualifications:
Specialized Experience: At least one (1) year specialized experience equivalent to a GS-5 Pharmacy Technician in federal service relating to the position is required.
Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled, such as assembling prescriptions properly with the correct drug, strength, quantity, auxiliary labels and prescription labels for window dispensing and mail delivery. Verifying patient's identification, receiving, verifying, signing for and storing incoming supplies and medications from local vendors, warehouse and contract suppliers.
