On tours of duty other than the Supervisory Utilities Systems Operator, the incumbent is in charge of the operation of the Medical Center's Central Heating Plant. The incumbent works alone in the performance of his/her duties. The incumbent is required to operate three (3) gas or oil fired water tube boilers with a total plant capacity of 75,000 pounds per hour output, as well as all related auxiliary equipment within the plant. Auxiliary equipment includes, but is not limited to: feed water pumps, transfer pumps, vacuum pumps, condensate pumps, de-aeration tank, water softeners, fuel oil pumps, combustion efficiency test equipment. The incumbent works with charts and graphs. Maintains proper steam pressure and water levels at all times by adjusting complex controls and auxiliary equipment. Operator synchronizes boilers when switching from one to another to avoid loss of steam pressure. Operator is responsible for the cleanliness of the boiler room. Inspects and adjusts boilers and equipment in accordance with prescribed schedule and check lists or as needed to maintain optimum performance. Operator collects samples and following prescribed methods, conducts water tests on boiler water, feed water, and condensate returns. From the results of these tests he/she is then able to adjust the dosages of treatment chemicals to maintain proper levels of chemicals within the systems. Continuous observation must be maintained over various controls and gauges concerning total steam demand, water levels in boilers and storage tanks, steam pressures in heating zones, feed water pressures, outside temperatures, and firing rates. Incumbent must be able to determine when additional boilers are needed to help carry the load or when a single unit will suffice. Incumbent must be able to switch from natural gas as the main fuel to number 2 fuel oil when required and back again. Operator must know the sequence to follow for start-up after a power failure and be able to perform his/her duties in a safe manner. During his/her regular shift, incumbent must handle emergency calls and determine from information given what action is required, (i.e., call in journeyman or contractor for repairs).

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Incumbent is required to work in all areas of the Central Heating Plant and occasionally works in awkward and cramped positions when making minor repairs or adjustments to boilers or equipment. The position necessitates the frequent lifting and moving of parts and equipment weighing up to 40 lbs. unassisted. Frequent standing, walking and climbing is required while checking equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent is exposed to extremes in heat, noise, vibrations, burns, cuts, scrapes, fumes and chemical exposure. Operator must be trained in and use the correct safety measures while performing their duties. (i.e. wearing of gloves, hearing protection, face shields, etc.)
Your background must demonstrate experience in a variety of boiler plant operator duties, such as experience with water treatment, fuel systems, steam generation and combustion techniques. Should also show experience reading and analyzing information from gauges, meters, and analog displays to determine operational status.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume or OF-612.
