Major Duties/Responsibilities
~ Perform initial history and physical examinations for all medical and psychiatric admissions.
~ Order laboratory, radiologic and other diagnostic tests and provide initial interpretations.
~ Order electrocardiograms (EKG) and provide initial interpretation.
~ Screen patients for disease prevention and identify health risks and needs.
~ Formulate a diagnosis based on history & physical examination and clinical findings; develop and implement a treatment plan; order appropriate pharmacological agents; refer to other healthcare professionals or community agencies as appropriate.
~ Participate in inpatient rounds as needed, interfacing with multiple other services, and coordinating patient care.
~ Respond to nursing and other staff calls on urgent/non-urgent issues on all hospitalized patients in an appropriate and professional manner, using great communication skills.
~ Perform inpatient procedures as experience and competency dictates.
~ Must demonstrate expertise in making medical judgments and be an active member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
~ Responsible for maintaining current clinical privileges and keeping licensure, advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and basic life support (BLS), and all other appropriate documents up-to-date.
~ Other duties as assigned.
Tour of Duty: Eight- or ten-hour shifts, after-hours and weekends; however, subject to change, depending on the needs of the service/medical center.
Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs. and over), light carrying (under 15 lbs.), reaching over shoulders, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (8 hrs.), standing (8 hrs.), ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13-16 in. to Jaeger 1-4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic colors, ability to distinguish shades of colors, hearing (aid permitted), hearing without aid, clear speech, and mental and emotional stability.
VA Qualification Standard for Physician Assistant
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States.
b. Education. The candidate must meet the following:
(1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations;
AND
(2) A Bachelors degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
c. Certification
(1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA.
(2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section G, Paragraph 5.
(3) If a PAs NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment.
d. English Language Proficiency. PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
